Coming up soon ......

- Will the Pens break the Senators 1-3-1 trap ?

- Will Fleury outduel Anderson in goal ?

- Will the Pens be able to keep Erik Karlsson in check ?

- Will the Pens power play be a big factor ?

- Will there be any changes in the Pens line up tonight from Game #7 against Washington ?

- Will the Pens have any let down after a tough series with the Caps ?

Here's hoping the Pens can get it done !

End of the 1st period, Ottawa 1 Pens 0

Turnover behind our own net leads to an Ottawa score.

Pens on their 4th power play in the 1st period and haven't scored ..... 4th PP carries over to the 2nd period.

Ottawa playing their usual defensive game and Anderson playing really well in goal ..... Ottawa still up 1-0 end of the 2nd period.

What a borefest. Ottawa really hasn't played all that well and doesn't deserve to win. Anderson just OK, nothing special. And the Pens actually haven't played poorly. Yet, here we are, with half a period left, looking increasingly like they may go down 1-0.

Anderson extremely lucky tonight.
Pens have looked a bit out of it.
Pens D is so damn slow.
I hate Sullivan not taking advantage of end of period situations to not stack up and put Sid and Geno together.

Have to be patient against Ottawa, they play the 1-3-1 trap and wait for you to make a mistake in the neutral zone to create a lot of their offense..... they are a defense first team.

Both goalies have played well.

Pens didn't take advantage of their power play chances early.

Ottawa has won 5 overtime games in the playoffs so far ..... OT coming up.

I can run backwards on ice faster than Maatta can skate going forward.

Ottawa still sucks. A team of Bobby Ryan, Erik Karlson and 21 bums.

That penguins power play is atrocious.

Pens power play was good in the CBJ series (5-15 = 0.333) but bad in the Washington series (3-22 = 0.136) and 0-5 last night against Ottawa ....... a good power play by the Pens would be big in beating Ottawa.

I thought we did OK against the Ottawa trap last night but not as well once we were in their zone especially at getting shots on net and traffic in front of the goalie ..... for much of the night our 4th line seemed to be our best line.

Ottawa is a defense 1st team ..... their offense isn't that good but they are opportunistic in that regard ...... they tend to generate much of their offense off of mistakes by the opponent (often turnovers in the neutral zone against their trap)...... last night Ottawa's 1st goal came off a mistake/turnover by Dumoulin/Hainsey behind our net and the game winner in OT came when Schultz pinched at the blue line, the puck got behind him, Ryan beat Maatta on a breakaway and then beat Fleury ..... both scores off Pens mistakes.

Fourth line...muckers and grinders. Ability and willingness to work down low. Cycle. Get those garbage goals. That might be what it takes to beat this Sens team.

Other than the glove save on the deflected shot, did Anderson really have to make any tough saves?

Watching Ottawa play is like watching paint dry. The quality and speed of the hockey game is reduced to garbage. I hope we find a way to expose them and reduce them to the junkheap they are.

Sheary needs to be replaced by Kuhnhackle. Bump wilson up to the 3rd line. Sheary has no defensive awareness in who to pickup and is terrible getting the puck out of the zone.

A healthy Hagelin would help also.
May be time to give Mark Streit a look back on D also. He is old, but can move the puck.

The inanimate posts and crossbar were his best friends. About 4 times in the game that I counted...

Goalie advocates will say it was exquisite body placement by him that allowed those to come into play. Or embittered types (like myself) will say, most of the time the shot simply went slightly awry just enough. But the goalie was still beaten.

This should be considered. Guentzel is also a tiny guy easily knocked off the puck but at least is productive in setting others up and getting shots on goal. Sheary had been as well in the past but not this year. And he's more often a turnover machine.

Guentzel has an amazing release and should be on the top PP unit playing high slot. I'd bump Kessel from the top unit.

A few thoughts:

1) Well now, the hangover after a series like Washington is a bit inevitable.
2) Olli Maatta is not as bad as you guys are making him out to be. He made an ill advised decision and didn't have Kris Letang's speed to make up for it.
3) We are getting nothing from Connor Sheary right now. If Hagelin is healthy, I would put him in, or Kuhnackl or Archibald.
4) Need to make more simple plays. Get the puck on net and traffic.
5) MAF was good again. Can't blame him with either goals.
6) If we had a healthy Letang, my god we would be rolling through these playoffs.
7) Geno was in Almost Beast Mode last night. He would just dominate but then skate into a problem and what looked like a great scoring chance would end up in a turnover.
8) Sid was really really not much of a factor last night. He needs to stop looking for teammates and get some pucks on the net.
9) Ottawa is on a roll right now. This ain't going to be easy.
10) Game 1's are usually fairly meaningless pending the outcome of Game 2

Pens slept walked thru that game. Penguins' O has been sporadic throughout the playoffs. Number of shots on goal doesn't tell the whole story. They need to take advantage of the good opportunities they have because they're not creating a lot of great opportunities to score. I find this worrisome...

Agree Del, it is worrisome. This run is much different than last years. Last year, we were playing in the other teams end alot, and cycling and creating opportunities off the heavy forecheck. This year, nearly everything is counter attacking and odd man rushes leading to our goals. We need to get dirty again and cycle and win puck battles and creat off the forecheck. We will not win this series if we continue to rely on pretty goals and pretty plays, we have got to get dirty and take it from them! I am tired of Marc Andre being our best player night in and night out, I bet he is getting tired of it too!

A Pens team owned by Mario and ruled by offensive stars has proven time and again they will resist the dirty and gritty playoff way until absolutely forced to. Sometimes they awaken and overcome in time, others they don't learn in time and they go down. As in each series, we'll see if they adjust well enough and before too late. Right now, one game down isn't enough for alarm.

Grit and dirt isn't why they lost.
Ottawa is a great skating and disciplined team... not some goons.

A franchise owned by Mario has been very successful.

Schultz actually made the error leading to the game winning goal, not maata.
Maata couldn't close
That's what the coach asks them to do, and they're gonna get burnt sometimes. That's what happened last night. Schultz pinched in and couldn't control the puck. That left Maatta to have to try and bail him out, Maatta couldn't catch Ryan to have a chance at defending him, but it's also bobby Ryan. He's probably gonna fly past most guys in that situation. From start to finish that was a hell of a play by him.

Bobby Ryan, the guy the Penguins would have drafted if they had lost the Draft lottery to Anaheim back in 2005. Then again, it's possible the Pens wouldn't be in Pittsburgh if they didn't end up with Sid.

"I thought we had a number of opportunities to put the puck on the net and then go to the net. We've got to make it harder on our opponent to defend us by getting more pucks in the scoring area...We were looking for the next play. Sometimes the next play never materializes."

--Mike Sullivan

Though it could have been a quote from a multitude of Penguins coaches in playoff game losses over the past 25 or so years.

Pens are fine. Just physically and mentally exhausted from Caps war.
Sens 1-3-1, which wasn't particularly well executed last night, can act to somewhat counterbalance a team with more talent.
Win the neutral zone and we'll be fine.
Fleury continues to be the story.

Ottawa winning the cup will set hockey back 20 years.

They remind me of those crap NJ Devil teams that won back in the 90s!

For the good of hockey ANYONE but Ottawa needs to win it all!

I understand, just pointing out it wasn't Maata's mistake on that goal

Oh I totally agree with you, and I know you understand that too. I was just mentioning that the mistake on Schultz was more of an agressive mistake that you just forget about and move on as opposed to one where the coach is looking at you wondering what the hell you were doing.
