60 Minutes just had a follow up report on the miraculous treatment of injecting the polio virus into neuroblastoma tumors, removing the tumor "shield" which allows the immune system to attack and destroy it naturally. What started in 2007 with mice has now been proven to work in humans. Might be the one of the biggest discoveries in the fight against cancer in the last 75 years. It will soon be available at 40 other medical institutions. If that goes well, it will be fast tracked to everyone.

What's even more promising is that this treatment may also prove to be successful for a variety of other cancers.

This may truly be a miracle.

It is an eye opening study ...... most phase I trials do not show these dramatic results.

To be accurate, it is a Phase I trial for recurrent GLIOBLASTOMA MULTIFORME and uses the modified (genetically engineered) polio virus injected directly into the tumor as you mentioned.

That sounds exciting. But would it be effective against all cancers? Nevertheless this is hopefully good news. I am reminded by the great philosopher Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Predator when he says, "If it bleeds, we can kill it".

I saw the tail end of it. Did these people injected have symptoms of polio? The guy shooting hoops walked with a limp. They also said it didn't work for everyone if I heard correctly. But the mouse tumor was insane.

Great News! ACC - Proud tradition of academics and athletics

No. They were able to remove a part of the virus that would cause it to spread from the tumor and infect other healthy cells. Therefore it stays only within the confines of the tumor. The man you saw had complications from a previous surgery when a blood vessel bled out in his brain.

The treatment hasn't worked for everyone, but part of that is because they are in trials and have changed the amount of virus used with varying results. There is a certain amount of inflammation that naturally occurs as the tumor is being killed by the body. Sometimes the inflammation itself has caused problems. So it's been a work in progress. Some patients have only benefited by gaining more time and quality of life; some have been in complete remission for years.

I know the one man had glioblastoma, but I thought the young woman (the first patient) had neuroblastoma. I could be wrong.

I believe they said they were doing trials with other types of CA, such as colon, prostate, pancreatic etc.
sounds very promising in the fight for a cure!

Recruits - yes, they are working on using this type of therapy to shrink tumors of all different kinds of cancer and the research has proven to be very successful in mice. One of the lead researchers said it is probably only 3-5 years away from human trials.
