Brian Generalovich
DR. BRIAN GENERALOVICH is one of those rare athletes who could excel in any sport he played. In fact, he was drafted by three professional teams.
His illustrious career began at Farrell High School where he was All-State in both football and basketball.
In football, he played both ways at tackle and helped Coach Tony Paulekas' 1959 squad to an undefeated season. He was All-WPIAL and first-team All-State that senior season and he was selected to the Pa. team for the Big 33 Game. He was also named to the Wigwam Wieseman National High School All-American team.
In basketball, he helped Coach Eddie McCluskey's team to back-to-back state championships in 1959 and 1960. As a forward on the 1958-59 team, he was named All-Section 3 and second-team All-State.
As a center on the 1959-60 squad, he was All-Section 3 and first-team All-State. He was a Dell Publication All-American that year and participated in the high school East-West All-American game. He led the team to Farrell High School's finest record at 31-1.
He went on to the University of Pittsburgh where he played basketball from 1961-64 and football in 1964.
In basketball, he helped Pitt to the NCAA playoffs in 1962-63 and to the NIT in 1963-64. He was selected as the Panthers' MVP three seasons and was team captain from '62-'64. He twice was named to the NCAA All-East team and twice received UPI and AP All-American mention. He also was a two-time Academic All-American.
At graduation, Brian was the fifth leading scorer in Pitt history.
Other hoop honors included: MVP in the Steel Bowl; all-tourney in the Hurricane Classic and Los Angeles Classic; Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award in 1964; National Slav Althlete of the Year in 1964.
In football in 1964, he played defensive end and was named to the NCAA East Team. He made the Notre Dame and Penn State All-Opponent Teams.
After college, he was drafted by the New York Knicks of the NBA, the Boston Patriots of the AFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL. He passed up the chances, however, to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
While in dental school in 1965-66, he played in the Eastern Professional Basketball League.
Brian was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame's Western Chapter in 1986 and was selected as Letterman of Distinction at the University of Pittsburgh in 1993.
