Today while having the tournament games on in the background, I decided to go down a rabbit hole of checking out old hoops games on this YouTube channel from a user “H2P!”
While I don’t have the attention span to actually watch one of them in their entirety, I took a look at a number of them at least in some part while scrolling ahead to see around the halfway point, some commercial breaks that were included (nice little blast from the past) and the finish.
I started following Pitt around the middle of the Howland era, so while some of the games below I recall, others from before ~01 or so I had no idea about.
-Started with Pitt-Ok St from the infamous 08-09 season. I remember at the time being taken aback by how high scoring it was at the half and the scare continued into the second, but of course they closed it out.
-Pitt-Wisconsin from the 06 tourney - I mostly remember it being BS to basically be playing a road game at the Bradley Center despite being the higher seed… another nail biter.
-Had no idea that Pitt in ‘98 beat a #4 ranked defending champion Kentucky team in an early preseason tourney in Puerto Rico fresh off upsetting another ranked team in Xavier, but I assume this was just a precursor to getting our hopes up only for things to just go to hell under Willard.
- I also had no idea Pitt played PSU in the NIT in 92, a month before I was born… funny they had a pretty energetic crowd there with the head football coach at the time even in attendance. I figured the 90’s were bad overall for Pitt, especially relative to the 00’s, but they did have some pretty satisfying wins in that decade… sure as hell seemed better than these past 6 years have been.
-Finally was surprised to see they played UNC in the 81 NCAA tournament. Obviously that didn’t end well.
Anyway, not sure what more there is to add here unless someone wants to share some old Pitt bball memory. Was interesting to take a random little trip down memory lane and to a number of games I was either too young to remember or happened before I was born on this fine Sunday.
