OT: Grammys

I know Gaga loves Bowie but the tribute was awful....way too much bombast and came across like a cheap Vegas act.....and she lookd like Bowies ex wife Angela Bowie making matters worse....that rendition of "Heroes" was almost unforgiveably horrible.....turning a song that was a plantive wail of hope into some cliched show bizzy throwaway......ugh.

I will take your word for it. I've never seen the Grammy's in my life. Awards shows like that are not for people with my musical tastes. For me, they may as well be the Country Music Awards.

I did like/respect David Bowie though so I'm disappointed – but not remotely surprised – to hear that they butchered his tribute.

Ultimately, that's just how it goes.

I think Lady Gaga was the right choice to do the tribute, but I agree it was poorly executed. I think she tried to do too many songs, so it came across as too rushed and frenetic.

The B.B. King tribute, on the other hand, was excellent.

Shame that B.B. King and Heady Lamar are even mentioned together in the same series of posts....

I only saw a clip of it on the news... the whole show looked pretty awful and glad I didnt wasted time watching it. At least K West didnt show off his drunken/high ignorance again, so, in that regards, the show seemed to be on an uptake.

Yeah I think Gaga was a good choice but as mentioned too many songs....and as I said Vegas feel....actually much of the blame could be with Niles.... I know the Let Dance era sold the most but wasn't his best era ...in my opinion...plus they ignored the last 33 or so years of his work?....come on man

Kendrick Lamar got robbed. That is all.
I watched about 5 minutes of the grammys and realized that I must simply be too old (or too old school) to enjoy the show. I can listen to most musical genre's but I have two basic criteria in order to enjoy a song:

1. the song needs to have something that resembles a melody (the use of musical instruments is also nice touch).

2. I need to be able to understand at least some small percent of the words.

Guess I'm SOL these days.

Yeah, I'm definitely in the "too old" camp to appreciate a lot of stuff, but I'm still up on current music enough (thanks long commutes and radio play) to know enough to follow the show.

I'm a fan of hip-hop, though, and really dig Kendrick's stuff. I really like the risks he took on To Pimp a Butterfly. It pushed the envelope and was a socially conscious album. You may disagree with the social commentary he makes, but it certainly makes a statement. I just can't get behind Swift's pop album winning just because it sold a ton.

Interesting to note, apparently Kendrick is working with Herbie Hancock on some new project.

But, Taylor's album is really--really good.
Said from someone who doesn't like much pop music..but, it's really outstanding.

I don't disagree. It's a great pop album. My only response, though, beyond personal preference, is that To Pimp A Butterfly was so influential not only in terms of pushing the envelope musically but making a statement. But given how many confused faces of white audience members I saw last night watching Kendrick perform, I shouldn't be surprised that wasn't more heavily considered.

Ski - this is The Grammy's. It's known for breaking on the more "conservative" side. Lucky that Adele's album dropped so late or she would have swept. Just the way it is. I actually think the show generally does a good job with presenters and collaborations, etc. Some work well, others not so much. The Adele segment was a bit weird.

I can't disagree with the social commentary because honestly, I couldn't understand a word of what the man was saying. I really tried to listen carefully because I was interested in hearing what he had to say, but I failed miserably. Probably why I'm not a big fan of rap or hiphop...if you don't have any melody and you can't understand the words, there's not much left. FWIW, I do like Herbie.

IMO the best performance of the night was Stevie Wonder and whoever those people with him were. It was the a cappella tribute to Maurice White of Earth Wind and Fire

I thought Alabama Shakes were good as well. Nice groove and not derivative

Agree. The BB King tribute and Alabama Shakes were great.

I am an enlightened hipster music snob. That commercial Grammy music is hot garbage, Kendrick Lamar aside.

I probably have eclectic enough tastes that I could be a hipster music snob, too. But out of curiosity, what bands does a hipster music snob listen to these days?
