Let's assume 6 auto berths (5 P5 + 1 G5) and two "wild-cards".

Assuming no upsets in the SEC/ACC/P12 champ games:
1. Alabama vs. 8. W. Michigan
2. Ohio State vs. 7. Michigan
3. Clemson vs. 6. OU/Okla St
4. Washington vs. 5. Wisc/PSU

If VT were to pull upset:
1. Alabama vs. 8. W. Michigan
2. Ohio State vs. 7. VT
3. Washington vs. 6. Clemson (or Michigan)
4. Wisc/PSU vs. 5. OU/Okla St

If Colorado were to pull upset:
1. Alabama vs. 8. W. Michigan
2. Ohio State vs. 7. Washington (or Michigan)
3. Clemson vs. 6. Colorado
4. Wisc/PSU vs. 5. OU/Okla St

If VT AND Colorado were to pull upsets:
1. Alabama vs. 8. W. Michigan
2. Ohio State vs. 7. VT
3. Wisc/PSU vs. 6. Clemson/Washington/Michigan
4. OU/Okla St vs. 5. Colorado

The only controversy would really be Michigan vs. a 2-loss Clemson and/or a 2-loss Washington.

I assumed Western Michigan would win the MAC and thus, would be the highest ranked non-power 5 school to make this playoff (Navy has a chance at this as well). If the top non-power 5 school doesn't have an auto bid, then, assuming no upsets, a school such as USC could get the #8 seed for an Alabama rematch.

I could have come up with several more scenarios including Florida beating Alabama, but let's be honest, that ain't happening. Colorado and VT are single digit underdogs, while UF is +21...

Well, this four team playoff has the same issue that the previous two team playoff did: it's abstract.
There's no real rhyme or reason as to who gets in or where they're seeded, save for Alabama.

I'm not in favor of expanding it to eight like the OP suggests, but at least in his scenario there are some concrete parameters.
