Andy Avalos was let go by Boise State yesterday. Finished 22-14 and was the MWC COTY last season. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator at Oregon under Mario Cristobal. It’s unlikely he’d come here given his west coast coaching experience, but just a name to keep in mind.

He’s only 42 years old. HCPN wouldn’t even consider hiring him. He likes his coordinators to be as old as possible.

I don't know the guy but why would we want a dude fired by Boise. We should have a rule. No more retread coaches that were fired or on the hot seat. We also need a young, fun, innovative OC and Heather should demand it.... even though she won't.

Avalos is a defensive coach, so this would have nothing to do with hiring an offensive coordinator. Some coaches are good coordinators or position coaches but it doesn’t translate into head coaching. Avalos was a DC for five years prior to becoming Boise State’s head coach in 2021. His defensive rankings were:

2016 Boise State: 29th in Total Defense
2017 Boise State: 38th
2018 Boise State: 30th
2019 Oregon: 9th
2020 Oregon: 59th* (7 games played)

If you discount the COVID season with a shortened schedule, he appears to be a solid coordinator.
