OT: It is scary how much the Steelers and Pitt are alike

The Steelers have a great defense
Pitt’s defense gets torched by middling offenses and any qb with a pulse
The Steelers defense is so OVERRATED it makes my head hurt! They can't stop anyone that has a resemblance of a pulse of a good offense....they feast off bad QBs. Put a good offense out there and the games are over by halftime.

Last in run defense(or close to it) for at least three years and couldn't cover a decent WR if you allowed them to play with 12 men. They had one guy to stop on Sunday...ONE GUY, and they let him go off for 13 catches for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

This isn't the first year I've thought that. But I'm noticing this trend with a lot of teams in the NFL: Milk the clock and play conservative on offense with the hopes of stealing the game on a big play or two. It's funny, because the teams that do it pose just about zero threat to actually win a championship. The 49ers are probably the closest thing to the contrary to that, but even they are at least middle of the pack in passing now.

Honestly, I don't think this can possibly be lost on these coaches. Pitt and the Steelers both had most of their success throwing it all over the place. The Ravens won a Super Bowl with Flacco but now want to take the air out of the ball and will never win another that way.

I think above average defensive coaches have figured out this is the best way for them to keep their jobs. Why take risks and have a potentially awful season when you can stay afloat, albeit while never being a real threat to win anything of significance, and keep collecting checks?

It is also the kind of thing that diminishes peoples opinion of Pickett's performance.

Last year he was a rookie QB for a mediocre team with mediocre coaching.

Add his record of that year with this year. What is his record?

The Steelers had 9 possessions against the Raiders. Tomlin pulled the plug in 4 of them. (Make no mistakes)

No QB is putting up "stats" under this game management.

I'm sick of it after 50 years :), it'a a Yinzer tradition or something, the dedicated Yinzer masturbates over The Bus running up the gut for 3 yards. It's lost on these morons that their best years where when they had real QBs and could throw. OK fine, in the 70s or the 90s, maybe you had a chance playing that way, I can't see it today. The funny part is Steelers fans scoff at Jerry Jones saying he interferes with the actual football, meanwhile the Rooneys force conservative pound the rock offense on their team.

This season they are very good
Unlike pitt’s terrible defense who even wvu’s backup made look stupid - Nevermind a quality qb like Maye

We may only win 1 more game- this weekend against an even worse VT team.

The stillers defense keeps them in every game and literally won the Browns game

Football guys generally seem to be pretty stupid. It's almost preferred by the industry. You're looked at as weird if you have outside interests (Joey Harrington got dinged as a draft prospect because he liked to play the piano) or don't fit the stereotypical meat head mold (Mike McDaniel). I love Mike McDaniel because he will do whatever he can to make the defense have to react to him. It's so awesome to watch a guy challenge the football industrial complex. And make no mistake, McDaniel isn't good simply because he's being different. I think he is legitimately very intelligent.

I like Pat and Mike in general but their stubbornness and overall refusal to deeply examine their failures is infuriating to watch. It's like having a friend from high school whose marriage is struggling but he won't help with the cooking or laundry because that's not how his dad raised him. Just prideful and, in a lot of ways, dumb.

The Steelers organization can be pretty well summarized by that last analogy. Rooney does things a certain way because that's how his dad did them in 1974. It's not going to change.

They’re absolutely nothing alike. They each have a bumbling offensive coordinator with a horrendous offensive line. That’s about it.

i am a dedicated yinzer and i always waited for at least 7 yard runs by bettis before making love to myself..

What kind of bar are you watching games at?
Are you telling me you've never known a Steelers fan like that? Seriously? I used to go to Steelers bar in Baltimore, almost every game for 20 years, there were a lot of fans like that, who'd curse every pass attempt, I quit going several years ago, most of the people I used to hang out with there retired or died or quit going. but I do have these yellowish jorts. And cargo sweatpants.

think you are making up things 79. we are the first team to run a 5 WR set in 1995 and yinzers loved it.. bradshaw was throwing it deep after 1976 more than any other team..

steelers fans dont care how we score, on land or by air. they just want points. i'll bet my life that steelers fans werent cursing pass attempts outside of maybe being in shotgun on a 3rd and 1 type situation..

if anything, steelers fans are upset at canada for relying on the run too much with how ineffective our OL is.. 98% of steeler fans WANT to throw it more instead of giving it to slow ass najee who gets hand off and stops and looks around.

I wouldn't ever accuse someone who lives in Baltimore as being a Yinzer.

Totally agree with this perspective. The stuff that's bothering me about the Steelers' offense right now isn't so much about philosophy. I don't care my team wants to run or throw, as long as they're good at it. But I am going to complain like hell when it looks like the coaches aren't putting the players in a position to succeed. When we run the same play - no motion, no play action, 11 personnel, vertical, flat, curl, out - from the shotgun over and over then I'm pissed. The Steelers don't show any creativity in design. They don't try to hide what they're doing. Defenses are openly saying they know what the Steelers are going to run. That's most of the reason Najee has the lowest yards before contact of any RB in the NFL. It's just lazy. And it's arrogant. Stuff like this should not be near any level of professional sports.

defenses are just absolutely stacking the line and we continue to run into it, 6 OL (TE) are not going to block 8 or 9 defenders, yet we continue to try.. thats why steeler fans are upset..

defenses are begging Kenny to beat them and until he can show he can consistently, we will continue to face 8-9 man fronts.. CA3 going deep last week helps but one play doesnt scare D Coordinators in changing their game plans..

You've never been to that club, easily 90% of the people there were born and raised in Pittsburgh or Western PA and moved there for jobs, like me- everybody goes out of their way to never really assimilate other than eating steamed crabs.

how else does one assimilate to baltimore culture besides rooting fo the orioles and ravens?

I disagree, I think they begrudgingly did those things, then reigned it in instead of going all in going forward, even in Ben's heyday. they would still waste a quarter and half minimum trying to anally establish the run, until they fell behand and then asked Ben to play street ball to catch up. How often does Rooney harp on having to "run the ball more" whenever he has an interview?

Not sure which one you went to but I had been to the Purple Goose many times before it was sold. Most of those guys were Colts converts that just didn't couldn't root for another stolen franchise.

I guess you're right, maybe saying yinz instead of hon? Pop instead of soda? But I've seen some really Yinzer like stuff here, like a group of Pittsburgh fans cheering "Here we go Steelers" at an Orioles game:)

I usually went to the Calgary or The Bowman and 2 other locations from 1993-2019 pretty regularly, almost everyone I knew there were from Western PA originally of course when there's 100+ people there you can't know everyone, just like you don't know how many where Colts converts and how many where from Pittsburgh at the Goose, I went to the Goose a few times because it was farther from where I lived and more crowded, but never really got to know that crowd.

That was how they described themselves. Took some pride in that fact.

i used to live in frederick mD and would go to a steeler bar every sunday because i didnt want to pay 200 for the nfl package. So instead, i'd go to a steeler bar every sunday, spend 100 bucks drinking my face off to save money..

my math was suspect at the time..

At this one bar, a friend I would go with was the landlord for a corrupt waitress and we'd run up a tab probably worth $200-$300 for the table of 4-6 and give her $20 each and be done with it.

I knew a few like that, but most had ties to Western PA and most had lived there. There was one guy, who always had the seat at the end of the bar early-mid 90s and would come early in his Steelers jersey, a Baltimore native, a year after the Ravens showed up he quit coming, had become a Ravens fan. I don't blame him, easier as far as TV family relationships etc.

i dont mind the steelers really going after big plays, sacks, turnovers but also being very susceptible to long drives. i'll take 2-3 turnovers if it means giving up a 14 play, 80 drive once a game.

now the rushing yards we are allowing, that is very concerning and i think it falls mostly on very poor Middle linebacker play. and lets be honest, we all love TJ but when he's in on a run play (Which thankfully isnt often) he is a huge liability. Thinking Highsmith is starting to go down this route too.

Would really like to see Herbig play a lot more on your typical run plays and save TJ for obvious pass plays only..
