Biggest non-shocker of the year... Penny Hardaway bought his recruiting class.
Well Memphis is on The U at 7:00 if you want to watch Wiseman while you still can.
This all happened before Penny became Memphis' coach I presume? If so, that maybe softens things a bit, but still highly shady. On the one hand, of course Wiseman got paid something. He's the #1 pick in the draft next year. On the other hand, Penny has coached him since what, 5th or 6th grade? If I had the money Penny does and had known the family for that long, you'd best believe I'd be helping them out whether they decided to play for me or not. That's just being a good human.

Lol.
Yeah they do look terrific. Kentucky-level freshmen playing in the AAC. They legit could enter the NCAA tourney undefeated with our without Wiseman. If anyone’s watching this game Memphis looks great . Great athletes with length that can shoot .

It was the local county judge. Memphis is asking for trouble here. Once this C- law student turned judge has his ruling reversed, Memphis is going to be held accountable. I'm no fan of the NCAA, but you allow this to happen, then all hell breaks loose. This isn't OT. This makes me sick. An injunction? Serious? Just make an AAU Senior Circuit for the Hardaways of the world (and there are many) and keep college hoops somewhat legit. This cat didn't need to attend college to begin with. And I'm not naive to think this is an isolated thing. It's out there in the open NCAA. Watcha gonna do???
Memphis is in a world of trouble.
Every school bends the rules, a lot knowingly break them, but most can keep their dirty laundry in house. Hardaway wanted the Memphis job even while Pastner was still there. He built Team Penny/Bluff City to be a feeder system into Memphis when he got the job and it’s no secret how things work at that level of basketball.
Memphis reminds me of Louisville. They’re the biggest game in their town and sold their soul for success. Memphis has a lot of corporate money behind them, but nothing nearly as powerful as Adidas U does, so I’m not sure that’s going to be able to save them. The back room judge filing a restraining order and the high powered criminal attorney taking the case all facilitated by the school to save their golden goose.
Don’t forget the Duke’s of the world. We’re all talking about James Wiseman’s move yet Marvin BAGley and Zion’s families moved to Durham, NC for 6 months. Hmm...The NCAA is a joke. The elite schools like UNC, Kansas, Arizona, etc. get a free pass, but they have no problem going after the SMU’s of the world.
For sure - there are certain untouchables. The NCAA is a gutless organization who pushes around the smaller schools on the food chain.Don’t forget the Duke’s of the world. We’re all talking about James Wiseman’s move yet Marvin BAGley and Zion’s families moved to Durham, NC for 6 months. Hmm...
It’s time to expose the sham that is “amateur” athletics in the 2x high revenue sports. These kids aren’t students and aren’t going to these dirty schools that are funded by Nike and Adidas for any other reason other than to train for the NFL or NBA. Take the shackles off and let the kids who are ready to go pro pursue their craft and make a college scholarship mean something again. Let the scumbag coaches ply their trades in NBA & NFL minor leagues where the hypocrisy has been lifted. It won’t happen however because the system in place now is too lucrative for everyone involved and all it takes is a bunch of crooked universities, boosters and coaches and a toothless, look the other way institution like the NCAA to let it all happen.Memphis is in a world of trouble.

Lol. Penny had no knowledge of being the Memphis coach when Wiseman transferred. He didn’t “buy” this recruiting class. He helped Wiseman’s mother out to help his AAU/HS teams. Hell, this kid almost went to Kentucky. This should be a non story. If Penny paid them in the last year this should be a story but he hadn’t steered any kids from his aau program or HS to Memphis so this a loose interpretation by the NCAA.
What’s funny is Calipari probably blew the whistle on this after losing out on him.
It has always been this way. How do you think UCLA and Wooden became a Powerhouse? Why don't we just do away with college basketball altogether? It's nothing at all like it was intended to be and it's getting worse. Just form a pro league and associate a college name with each team. The kids don't have to go to school and can be professional. Then the fans and alumni can still have the entertainment of the sport and the kids can get paid, as they are anyhow. This whole college sports things is a sham and a fraud right now.

I'm just saying, quit the sham. This isn't college sports. Most of these kids couldn't graduate from high school if they weren't pushed through the system because of their sports. Most of them definitely don't belong in college. Let them do what they're good at for a while and get paid, but don't call it the NCAA or a college team. It's a pro team that is linked to a college. But when they're done playing, and that's usually within 5 years, they're screwed. That's on them.

There's a quite a bit of horse-trading on the AAU scene. Everyone has families who need assistance along the way- big deal who cares. I agree with SMF, some if it is just being a good human to help others get ahead.
I think most of the money went to help him buy extra books. To be honest, when I first heard the $11,500, my first thought was "Penny, you cheap b@astard." My second thought was "hopefully that's just the money they found out about and he helped them more than that."
You mean they’re really not student-athletes??Yes, "most" of these kids are borderline morons and couldn't possibly be disciplined enough to be a high end athlete and graduate high school. As your post proves- they obviously don't have the high intellectual level of a message board poster.
