Do the Pirates have a potential top of the rotation pitcher in Oviedo? He's a big guy, 6'5" 245 lbs. I find it fascinating that he leads MLB in number of starts with giving up 1 or fewer runs, but also leads the NL in number of losses. That seems like something that could only happen with the Pirates.

In his 13 losses he's given up a .361 OBP, .504 SLG, and a 7.11 ERA.

I'm no Sherlock Poirot, but I think I've figured out why he leads the NL in losses.

All Jokes aside only 4 of his losses are under a 3 ERA, but that's going to happen to every starter. Gerrit Cole has a 3.03 ERA, but only 10 wins despite having 18 quality starts in 26 games.
Oviedo has 12 quality starts in 26 appearances, which is still pretty solid and only 1 less than Keller had in 31 appearances during his breakout season last year.

The best i can say is that he’s earned the opportunity to be in the rotation next year. Will he be good? Ehhhhhh

He was a good pitcher for a pretty long time.

Of course he had about the worst luck of any pitcher in mlb history.

Paul Skenes
Mitch Keller
Johan Oviedo
Roansy Contreras (hopefully he gets his head straight)

And then a fifth that we sign in free agency. Not to mention we have Solometo in the minors coming up. That’s a pretty good starting point.
