OT - Larranaga to be out at The U

4-8 and 75 years old. He was coach at my Alma matter when I was there and he’s son was quite the 3 point shooter there as well. I think it’s just time.

I can’t understand why coaches work into their 70s .
It’s insane .
What’s not to understand? Ok you don’t want to work until you are 70, I do. I like my job, have great friends at work, make good money, and have no hobbies other than watching sports that I want to pursue for 40 hours per week. I can understand your point of view and coaches that want to coach until they are 70 too.

His comments here are telling and shouldn't come as a surprise.

What is a trip to the Final Four to these kids? Their moms probably have two bedrooms full of trophies from tournaments they played in all their lives.

They either want playing time or money.

Honestly think Capel has done a good job of quickly understanding NIL and the state of college basketball.

I think his point was that he went to the Elite 8 with nobody on an NIL and then the Final Four with Wong, Pack, and 1 other on NIL deals and then he had 8 people come to him and say they are entering the portal, presumably for more money and this isn't what he signed up for and is not sure he can be an effective pro coach. He said this is pro basketball now and he's right. He said he enjoyed building relationships and developing players like Wong but that's gone now.

I also wonder if Ruiz isn't funding basketball much anymore. But then he thanked billionaire Miami booster, Jorge Mas, who is a part-owner of Inter Miami. I didnt know he was a UM alum. That's another billionaire to fund NIL.

Millionaire coaches can’t just keep all the on money and need to work all year round?!?
Players are meant to commit to a team, stay there 4-5 years, get better, contribute, etc. That's what college sports is all about.

Destroying that makes coaches hate the current system just as much as the fans do. Relationships mean nothing. Coaching ability means nothing. There are no more cultures. It's just random college students on year to year pro contracts with no penalty for transferring. It's a total nightmare.

Coaches will always make a lot. I don't think they have to work any harder now. They just need big nil funds. That's all that is required these days. Makes the coaches helpless.

If coach K coached during nil, and Dook didn't put out top nil money, he would quit too.

So then why aren't coaches required to stay for the entire length of the contract they enter with a school? The contract represents their negotiated commitment, which they often break. Relationships already mean nothing in college sports, the coaches are getting a taste of their own medicine.

The contract contains a buyout clause. Tell the schools to try to attract coaches without that clause. It protects both parties.

My only issue is why wait until halfway through the season? If Miami was 10-2 right now would he really be stepping down? Seems like an easy excuse for all coaches to step down or blame if they aren't having the success they are used too.

Season is over. He probably hates his team. They probably hate him. So why stay?

Just like there is a clause saying a player isn't guaranteed a scholarship each year after year 1 in the program. Listen, I dislike what college athletics has become. But fairness says that the players should not have to be loyal to program for 4+ years if the coach does not have to be committed to the program for the length of time that he said he was going to be.

There is something to be said about letting players out of their scholarship if there is a coaching change. But what is going on now really has nothing to do with that. The courts allowing NIL has completely upended college football and basketball. It is now professional sports without professional rules. It is the Wild West and I don’t see any way to fix it. Basketball can survive it more because the tournament levels of playing field to some degree but football is just going to be the major schools year in and year out. We will be lucky to ever make a playoff.

How is that any different than the deal that the players have with the schools?

You simply cannot be in favor of allowing coaches to leave because it's a part of their contract but think that the players should not be allowed to leave even though it's a part of their contract.

They are required. But there are buyouts, exemptions, whatever, etc. Coaches are not equivalent to players. They are not the same.

Coaches aren’t committed to schools that long despite being paid well
