Canada had won their prior 4 meetings by a combined total of 41-4. This one ended 1-1 and went to a shootout.

Canada went 0 for 8 in the shootout. Latvia scored on its 8th shot.

Reading Canadian papers, this upsets them more than Trump suggesting they become the 51st state. (A nationwide poll there found no more than 19% of Canadians in any province (Alberta) supported that idea while 79 to 90% were opposed.) They are primarily blaming the coaches and not the players.

I would guess that the #1 reason why Canadiens don't want to join the US is they don't want to give up their "free" Healthcare system. We are the only Western nation that has for-profit middlemen in between us and our doctor and that is so so weird. Like, it makes 0 sense to operate the way we do. We all understand that healthcare in every other Western nation isn't free as their tax dollars pay for it but us Americans pay out the nose for Healthcare so it's not like we are seeing these great savings.
