In a shocker, Messi announced he wont resign at Barcelona. Beckham's InterMiami franchise has been rumored to be trying to land him for years in an effort to make the new Miami franchise a "super club." LA Galaxy did this in the 2000s when they had Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Robbie Keane and were so fun to watch.

As great as Beckham was for the league, Messi would do so much more. The dirtly little secret about Beckham was that he was a facilitator, not a goal scorer so Americans couldn't appreciate his game. Messi would be out there scoring some sick@ss goals.

That's an odd way to look at it. Messi CAN'T sign with Barcelona, because they have a limit on how much money they can spend on players this year, and they are so far over it already that they had (before today) FIVE players that they had agreed to contracts with that they can't actually sign, because they are already that far over the limit. If they had actually signed all five guys and hadn't sold off anyone else their payroll would have been well over $100 million higher (probably closer to $200 million) than it was allowed to be.

And since everyone knows they have to sell off players, no one is offering them fair value for the guys they are trying to sell. That's why Messi can't sign, even though he wants to and Barca wants to sign him. If they don't get their situation figured out soon Messi wouldn't have been able to play until at least January, and might have had to sit out all season. And there is no way he is missing out on all that money.

And while Messi may play for Miami someday (in fact it's probably pretty likely), that day is not coming any time soon.

I wasnt aware LaLiga put in some type of salary cap. How American of them. Seems like Barcelona is basically telling LaLiga...."um, you want Messi, dont you, let us break your rules unless you want him up north at PSG."

FWIW, PSG has the best odds to land him, then Barca, then Man City. then "any MLS club" at 11:1

It's basically their version of Financial Fair Play. Essentially you can't keep spending more money than you bring in. But since Barca brings in a lot more money than everyone but Real, Barca can spend a lot more money than everyone except Real and still be in compliance. In other words, they bring in so much money that two years ago (before the pandemic) their payroll was over $600 million that season, and that was OK because of how much money they bring in. Someone like, say, Sevilla, wouldn't be allowed to spend anywhere close to that amount, because their revenues won't support it.

But with how much their revenues have gone down over the last two years they can now "only" spend something like $250 million this year. And they are way, way over that.

But what La Liga is trying to do is to stop a team from taking on unsustainable amount of debt to try to win. And that still hasn't stopped Barca from being more than $1 billion in debt.

Yeah, that's a "b".

Sources tell me that the Riverhounds have made a bid for him, by offering NIL rights for Gaucho Parilla.
