Ot- Mike Woodson to IU

I think it's a decent hire. He's a little old but he's an Indiana guy and helped improve two bad franchises in both the Hawks and, even more impressively, the Knicks. Got both into the Conf semis.

Just a reminder of how ephemeral college sports success is, even for the schools we think are untouchable.

Auburn was on top of the world in 2010, but has had one double-digit win season since; Notre Dame had several mediocre years; same for USC... Michigan?

In hoops, well out deal Panthers were excellent 10 years ago but have fallen off. Programs like UConn, Michigan State, UCLA that seemed like locks every year have been underwhelming.

Just shows how hard it is to stay on top.

I thought he wasn’t a bad NBA head coach, though I have no idea how that’ll translate to the college level.

They see Howard having success is my guess and the same person who wrote the check to Archie said hire Woodson

It died after Knight left.Yes they’ve had a couple good years but nothing like Knight did.Kind of like us losing Sherrill in football.
That’s pretty much how I see it as well. only those of us who were college basketball fans while Knight was there would understand how strong that program. IU then was a blueblood for sure.

He is 63 years old and he has the exact same amount of college coaching experience as those of us posting on this board. If he doesn't hire the right assistants this move has disaster written all over it.

And if this doesn't scream out to the Indiana fans how far their program has fallen then I don't think anything will.

This makes sense. It was hilarious to think they would get Holtmann, Drew or Beard. There isn’t one school in the B1G where those coaches would leave for. Bob Wills is Still the King...just like Waylon sang it 40-50 years ago. Two successful XII coaches in Texas aren’t leaving for a B1G program nor is the King of the B1G programs (TOSU) leaving for Indiana. It’s not 1986 anymore......and no, Michigan St isn’t an elite job either. Sorry.

Beard will probably go to Texas. Drew will be at Baylor for a long time. Money grows on trees in Waco.

Drew : Baylor :: Wright : Villanova

The question is, who are the right assistants? I’d imagine you’d want one guy with a lot of collegiate coaching experience and another one that would be their lead recruiter, leaving the last chair as a wildcard.

Perhaps someone like John Thompson III would be a good option? Lots of experience and knows what it’s like to lead a prestigious program in the shadow of another coach.

You need to hire former failed head coaches that are not young. Your brother who was out of the game for a while and had all his connections dry up.. And make sure those coaches can’t recruit. Then your program will be in great shape.

Coaches by committee, what could go wrong???? Indiana been Pitting it lately themselves with hires

So you're Mike Woodson. And now you have Thad Matta looking over your shoulder? That's weird. JMO.
That’s certainly something to keep in mind. However, playing Devil’s advocate, I wouldn’t consider it weird so long as Matta is medically unfit to coach and isn’t in a position to be “next in line.” I’d also imagine Woodson knew the arrangement prior to accepting the job.
