This summer was basically a dud IMHO so I am thrilled that the serious movie season has begun. I've only seen 4 so far:
1. Sicario - Great flick. Very suspenseful and as you would expect, violent. Appears this is going to be a series of movies for Benicio del Toro. Scary dude. Grade: A
2. Everest - Good movie. It was exactly what I expected walking in and the cinematography was excellent. Makes me wonder what exactly compels a person to want to do this. I'm way too chicken. Grade: B
3. The Martian - This was Damon's movie all the way. More scientific than pure space adventure, but I liked it. Not as much as Gravity, but it was very entertaining. Grade: B+
3. Bridge of Spies - Classic Spielberg film - nice to see him back in his wheelhouse of period drama pieces. Excellent performances especially by the "Russian spy" actor whom I had never heard of before. I expect Oscar noms for picture, director, best supporting actor and perhaps actor for Tom Hanks too, but there appears to be some real competition for that slot (Michael Fassbender, etc.) Grade: solid A
Looking forward to Steve Jobs, Spotlight, Brooklyn, Carol and Trumbo opening soon among others.
