Okay, I can admit I can be a bit of an old man yells at clouds. I own that, and don't run away from this. And in many cases, I also am a bit proud of it. We mean well. But when I was young like alot of you guys, one thing I really hated was those older than me acting like music is dead. That they give no credence to anything beyond, I dunno, Led Zeppelin. It used to piss me off. I was of the generation where U2, REM, the Smiths, hell Prince, came of age. So I used to get so frustrated when older dudes would not even give any kudos to these groups. It was just FREE BIRD!!!!!!!

So I never want to be that guy. But also as an old guy who yells at clouds, I am also one who is not afraid to call a spade a spade is something sucks. But there is alot of good music that is still being played. I am calling this within the last 10 years.....because it goes so fast.

So this is a thread of these groups and music that yinz like over the past decade. Hopefully this extends past like a true garage band or obscure band that many love to tout to show how "cool" they are. This is not the point. Just good stuff.....that may come from bands somewhat under the mainstream media.

With Apple Music I am listening to a lot of newer music by old bands. Deep Purple has a new album out now. It’s not bad. Jefferson Starship still exists and just released a new record. Who remembers Vandenberg? They regrouped and released a new album in 2020. I have been listening to all the Marillion albums I never listened to that they kept making this century.

Doobie Brothers.

I think because it’s so... available. It takes little effort to find new music but also there’s just so much of it that you get lost.

My friends and I were of the Napster generation, like 10th grade onwards (really early on) and it was so exciting to find new music that way, chatting to other people with similar tastes about what they like, exploring their libraries, and downloading new stuff. We’d still buy the CDs of the bands we really liked, and went to a lot of shows, too, so it wasn’t all piracy, but it did help discover bands we otherwise wouldn’t have ever known.

Have to agree. For most of my life, I had to be around music constantly. But it doesn't really hold the same mystique that it once did, when I discovered so many great songs, etc. Most new music I've tried has been garbage, and music in general has gotten a bit played out.
I enjoy listening to podcasts while I’m exercising, chores etc. I agree with you; music in general is played out. For me at least.

Very true. I used to buy a CD and listen to it over and over again. Like I might take 3 - 5 CDs with me on a road trip and be ok with it. Now, I'll have a billion songs at my fingertips and not be able to find one I want to listen to. Access overload, perhaps.

Mostly Jazz but I have to say the great stuff from the 70’s like eagles abs Doobey brothers and Earth Wind and Fire.

Definitely. I miss that. Now with Sirius XM, I am constantly flipping channels, even a song I like, I switch over to see if there is a song I like even more. It is a horrible and annoying habit I have fallen into.

I’ve mentioned this a ton but I’m really digging Gary Clark Jr. I also really like Hiromi Uehara and her work with Simon Phillips.

Yep. Same goes with movies for me.

With music, it was just such a different feeling to possess a tangible product. I would read the book inside, associate the songs with the particular artwork in both the case and on the disc itself, etc. You just felt way more invested in it. And how I felt about the songs was always fluid: A song I might not like upon the first 40 listens would all of a sudden become my favorite track. Now, I just skim the stuff I like the first time I hear it. I don't give the other stuff a chance to grow on me. And I make playlists that only have "A" songs, so I barely ever hear the B/C songs that I used to end up liking.

I'm old enough to remember the older guys trashing us for liking/listening to Bachman Turner overdrive ....🇨🇦

To answer the question, a few newish albums culled from my Spotify:
  1. Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers
  2. Swimmer by Tennis
  3. Life Will See you Now by Jens Lekman
  4. Glue by Boston Manor
  5. The Unraveling by Drive-by Truckers
  6. Remind me Tomorrow by Sharon Van Etten
  7. Capacity by Big Thief (they've released like 5 albums in 4 years, the output is insane. "Shark Smile" rules, so does "Mary.").
  8. Norman ****ing Rockwell by Lana Del Rey
  9. Folklore by Taylor Swift (fight me)
  10. Antisocialites by Alvvays
  11. Buncha albums by Beach House
One thing to understand about the music industry is it's more fractured now than ever. Spotify, Youtube, Souncloud mean anyone can publish music. And the proliferation of decent USB mics and recording/mixing software means there is just so much music being made and released. You don't need a studio, you don't need a publisher, you don't need to press vinyl or ship CDs. You just need a Macbook pro and Blue microphone. But there are so many blogs/sites/reviewers that it's easier than ever to find stuff.

If you want an example of this DIY ethos that echoes back to the late 80s/90s scene with like, The Replacement and Husker Du, check out Car Seat Headrest. It's a guy who recorded in his bedroom and then landed on Colbert (Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales is maybe his best track). There's also a ton of hip-hop rap that happens in the digital space that I'm blind to.

You are younger than I am, by a few years plus. If you like the old stuff.....road trip material...
Quadrophenia-The Who
12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus-Spirit
Chicago 1&2......1 was actually CTA
Machine Head-Deep Purple
Stop Making Sense concert-Talking Heads
This will get me many a mile
You would probably hate these..ha

Yeah I came up with those bands, early U2 and the British New Wave stuff. I was there for the first minute of MTV, yet still loved bands like led Zeppelin and the Beatles.

I got fairly caught up in recent years, I don't think I'm "old guy yelling at sky" musically at the moment...

Billie Eilish is starting to catch on for me. I really dig the older phantogram stuff from the turn of the decade.

Yeah, I have to admit I am starting to really like Eilish's stuff. I can't handle Lorde, at least after the South Park episode which is all I can think about when I hear her.
