I believe this is the first release from Amazon’s Freevee, their new free streaming network. I watch it on Amazon but I believe it’s available free on YouTube and possibly other channels.
It’s the latest series from Greg Garcia (Raising Hope and My Name Is Earl), the new prince of whacky, offbeat comedies. It stars the always excellent Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope, Justified, Deadwood) and the equally good Martha Plimpton.
Dillahunt plays a man who, along with his cellmate, is released from prison 4 years early after serving 26 years for dealing pot. That was back in the days when some politicians thought stringent minimum sentences were the way to solve the drug problem. Worked real well, didn’t it!
He and his cell are are released early because of COVID 19 as overcrowded prisons released some non-violent criminals. His roommate was serving a 10 year sentence for stealing an ice cream truck. Obviously, Dillahunt has a lot of new things to get used to, which forms one basis for the comedy). Having nowhere else to go, Dillahunt goes to live at his roommate’s mother’s house. Along with the mother and a released female prisoner. they form a gang to commit non-violent crimes to support themselves.
Dillahunt, who learned a lot about how to pick locks, open safes and other things handy for criminals from other inmates, is the mastermind. But, he won’t rob or steal from innocent people; only from crooks. Their first target is a guy selling stolen toilet paper for $40 a roll because of the shortage caused by the pandemic. The second is a veterinarian charging for fake COVID tests where he makes up the test results. Dillahunt breaks into his office at night, steals money from the safe and his laptop containing customer information. Then, Like a modern day Robin Hood, he gives all of the customers their money back and leaves enough info about the scam with the police to enable them to arrest the crooked vet.
The target in Episode 3 apparently will be a crooked Congresswoman who made millions through insider trading at the start of the pandemic.
So far, I can’t identify any specific Pittsburgh locations, although it’s been so long since I lived there that I’m not sure I can identify anything other than major landmarks. But, the credits confirm that it is shot in the ‘Burgh.
The first two episodes were pretty good. It’s got an 82% score from Rotten Tomatoes and pretty good reviews.
