For those interested in campus architecture, I thought this was a nice article in the University Times.

The details of some of the adornments on Pitt's buildings sometimes go unnoticed in such a busy, densely packed, urban environment, but if you take the time to look up, you'll often notice features and figures you didn't know where there (this goes for the inside of some buildings too).

The text of the article describing these features is linked here: http://www.utimes.pitt.edu/?p=41485

The photos from the article (some in larger sizes) are here...

Excellent. The architecture at Pitt is amazing. Pitt has so many awesome buildings.

I have been around the world and the Pitt campus is truly a special place.

What is the status of the "bubble" field that they are constructing at the old Trees Field? I understand, among other things, it is going to be used for Band practice, tennis courts and possibly other activities.

It has been approved as a $13.2 million project. Already under construction, it is targeted for completion in early 2017. It's primary use is going to be for the general student population (intramurals and club sports) and the bulk of the money is coming from Student Affairs. I don't know what that means for the Band. I haven't seen anything about them using it. The varsity Tennis team will not be using it.

Is the dome going to cover the field the band currently uses for practice? If so I guess the band would either need to practice there or at the soccer field. The Cost center field isn't useful for their purposes. The band is kind of forgotten when it comes to facilities. They were relegated from a really nice space at Pitt Stadium to the cold, dank basement of Trees with the expectation that they'd be there 2-4 years. They are heading into their 17th year down there now.

I think the track & field program has as big of a gripe. Again, this isn't really an Athletics Department project. The band is part of the athletic department.

I would assume a big reason to build this dome would be to free up the Cost Center more. I expect they'll renovate that next. I know it is supposed to get new turf. They really need to expand it.

You know with the site development for this dome, if we decided to knock down the Cost Center there would be enough room for ....eh never mind

There is no way they can get rid of the Cost Center, it is too heavily used by all the varsity sports and everything in between. And remember, it also sits on top of a UPMC garage.

I hear ya....just looking the overhead view in your attached link which is will be cool when finished
