OT: Pitt hire for research head

Pitt is poised to keep and potentially increase grant money with the combination of health care and technology. This hire puts an experienced grant writer on the team to take this to the next level. I would not be surprised to see us take the grant money up over 1B/yr with Gallagher's commitment to move more to the entrepreneurial side to attract more researchers and grant money.

It's also important to diversify Pitt's sources of external research funding. It will always be heavily in the health sciences, because that is where most external funding comes from in academia, but it is smart to build up other areas too.

It's clear this has been a strategy of Gallagher's since he has been hired, and one of the reasons he was hired out of NIST.

That "next level" would absolutely put Pitt in rarefied air and would be absolutely great for Western PA.

Yet we can't win ten games in FB for nearly 40 years. Mind boggling.

Digressing, but I wish he had been hired to head the Computer Science program TBH. My youngest is majoring in it and we are a bit underwhelmed. He's had to take classes the last 2 summers from other schools Comp Sci departments to beef up his resume.

In the Corporate world this is called "leakage." This is PITT why isn't this major top tier??

The big "splash" stuff like this looks and sounds great but the ship is leaking all over which is caused by lack of attention to details by top management!

Leakage can kill an organization over the long haul!

Unfortunately " leakage " is evident at PITT in different areas especially in athletics!

Attention to detail is important!

Well actually I think it's that Pitt has paid more attention to their Computer Engineering vs. Computer Science students. With the introduction of the new School of Computing and Information, I am hoping there will be a greater focus. In the meantime, my son with be a senior next year, so not sure he benefits much from it. That's why we stepped back and tried to back fill on our own.

Yeah, unfortunately, the timing for your son is likely going to miss most benefits of the creation of the new school. The administration is clearly emphasizing upgrading Pitt in this area. Beyond the combining of IS and CompSci, the home of this new school will be the new facility that they are going to build on the Syria Mosque site so they are obviously putting major $ into it, but it doesn't happen over night.

Agree. I'm most disappointed in their lack of support for co-ops and internships for Comp Sci students. It has been extremely disappointing. Hard to network for these on your own especially when it appears like your own school is working against you.
