Went into a small cafe in Penang, Malaysia with my kid the other day and overheard the table next to where we were being seated talking about Pittsburgh. Turns out the people were from Altoona.

How often do those who travel here run into Pittsburgh or Pitt people while abroad?

I live in New Zealand and occasionally run into someone from Pittsburgh. It is usually only obvious if they are wearing clothing of one of the teams. One time I recognised it from a very think Pittsburgh accent. My wife told me not to say anything, but I just had to.

I on occasion see WVU gear here. Fairly often see PSU stuff, but many have no connection to PSU (maybe bought onsale off the bargain rack) so I fail when trying to get them riled up.

Not sure if it qualifies as "abroad" but my husband and I were in a tiny, local bbq place in St Johns one winter. I mean a hole in the wall place that we came to know only because we are there often. My kids were home with our neighborhood babysitter. Seated next to us in the only other table was a couple who not only were from Pittsburgh but also very good friends of the babysitter's family. It was very bizarre.

I live in Kentucky, and went to a small Indian restaurant. We found out through conversation that there were 5 different families from Penn Hills.

I've come to the conclusion that Pittsburgh area people travel a lot. We've run into multiple Western PA folks every time that we've traveled into the Caribbean and Mexico. For whatever reason, they're usually from towns north of the city, such as Allison Park, Shaler, Gibsonia, Seven Fields, etc.

Ran into a dentist and his family from Mt. Lebanon in a small burg in Italy.

Does Rehoboth Beach or Ocean City count as abroad?

When I was in Tokyo a few years ago I met two girls from the Pittsburgh area at a hole in the wall noodle place, both were going to school at Temple's Tokyo campus.

My favorite Pittsburgh encounter happened years ago in St Martin. My wife and I and another couple from Pittsburgh are on a great beach called Baie Rouge. Young couple is sitting 50 feet away. He comes over to ask if we have a cork screw. We strike up a conversation and it turns out they are both from Pittsburgh. Of course, we ask if they want to join us for a drink. He says sure and retrieves his girl friend. She walks over, buck naked and sits down with us for a drink. (BTW - on a scale of 1-10, this girl is a 10.5). My buddy and I are trying our best not to stare (which is simply not possible). Also turns out that she knows my sister from working at Booby - I mean Bobby Rubino's. Went back to that beach everyday for the rest of the vacation but never saw those two again.

Thank you for that.

Saw a college kid with a Zoo shirt at the Seven Pools of Oheo in Maui. Philly family, son was going to Pitt

Had our picture taken on Santorini by a WVU grad.

Someone said "Hail to Pitt" to me at Dam Square in Amsterdam. I was so surprised. It was a couple from Pgh. I think 1 if not both went to Pitt. Had a quick conversation about Pitt football.

I wear Pitt stuff all the time when I travel ao this happens quite a bit. There are more that I can't remember.

As a kid I was riding on the railway that takes you up Pikes Peak. I was wearing a Bethel Park baseball shirt. The guy sitting in front of me saw my shirt and it turns out he was a Bethel grad and his mom still lived there up by the high school.

I was at a hotel in Thailand this week and this Chinese guy had a Pittsburgh shirt on. I said something to him about Pittsburgh...

He said, "what's Pittsburgh?" In a great accent too. :)

Went to the Mayan pyramids at Chichinitza, Mexico, one of the sounenir vendors was wearing a Steelers t shirt, he explained to me that he's been a Steelers fan for life, watches on TV when they get the Steelers, never been to the USA, mentioned that most Mexicans are Cowboys fans but a lot like the Steelers.

Just got a text from my oldest who is on a student trip to Europe and he said he saw a Pitt script hat at the Roman Coliseum. I told him to quit sightseeing and get a pic of the guy. :D

It's pretty cool to wear Pitt gear internationally. I met a guy on a bus in Lviv in January whose girlfriend went to Pitt.
