The Pittsburgh Marathon is tomorrow. So who's running it? I am and looking forward to it. I'm psyched!! Looks like the weather will be chilly, chance of rain, temps in the low 40's for most of the race with a start time temp of 38.

This is the largest single spectator athletic event in Pittsburgh with over 100,000 people lining the streets of the course. There will be between 24,000 and 25,000 runners just for the Full and Half Marathons on Sunday.

Good luck to those of us running. And to those who aren't, get out and support the runners. We all appreciate it a lot.

1985, run your PR tomorrow !!
How was your training the last few months ?

I've run PITTsburgh many times.. my PR at PITTsburgh was a shade under 2:50 many years ago when I used to log 70-90 mile weeks.

Take the run in and and have a BLAST !

I'm anxious to know if you met your goal.

Thanks for that, Souf. It is relatively easy to navigate the roads, even during the event. I've been on both sides of the event, as a spectator and a runner. It's easy to get around if you're know where you're going and can read.

1985, enjoy yourself and hope you run your PR !

Well, I've had a bad back for much of my training the last month. But I think I'm ready and am shooting for a PR. I'm not a sub-3 hour guy by any stretch. And I'm doing the half this time just to be safe. My son is doing the full and is shooting for 2:50.

Different course this year as we pass PNC Park, Heinz Field and PPG Paints Arena. A little flatter.

Are you running this year, Pitt-Chains? If you are, good luck and enjoy!

Im so glad I'm not doing the half this year. Weather is going to be so miserable tomorrow for everyone. Wish everyone the best who is running, but like the worst weather imaginable for a distance run.

If you only knew how bad I wish I could... I was one of those 70-90 miles week guys and mixed in with too much basketball and a torn ACL... I admit I have serious fever to run and miss the training. Also eats me up my employer has two teams in the relay and the talk the last month... UGH !

Good luck to you and your Son !

This year's weather is supposed to be the worst weather in the history of the Marathon. I'll just layer and wear sweatpants to the start and take them off when I start running.

I'm not a fan of cold weather running either. I hate waiting in the cold in the corral. But it's funny....the best times I've had and the best races I've run have been done when temps are in the 30's and 40's. Maybe some rain. I have problems when it's real sunny and the temps are in the 70's and close to 80 at 10AM as they were a few years ago. The race was under a Red Alert.

Thanks, sub 2:50 was my goal to qualify to run Boston.

My son is trying to qualify for Boston. I'm sorry you're not going to be running tomorrow. Knees can be a problem. My wife was the runner in our family for years and she just had a miniscus tear, so she had to have that repaired. She hasn't been running for months and she's going nuts.

I hope you get back to running like you did. I'm sorry I didn't start earlier in my life, that's for sure. It has helped my overall health and outlook.

Good luck to your Son... Boston is Boston and proud to say I've run it !

I used to run this back when it was UPMC. I ran during the Olympic trials year and it was very hot. I'd take 40s and rain any day.

Looks like you almost got it down. Great job mall walker. But you've got a bit of a jump to your stride.

That is funny as heck !!

When did you run Marine Corps? My son ran it a couple of years ago and was sick the night before. So he didn't do too well at the race.

The temps are actually great for a long run day....its the rain mixed with those temps that makes it bad. Going to make everyone's clothes wet and never dry out, chaffing, heavier, sticking to the body, and make it feel so much colder than what it is.

That's true. The last weather report I heard was that the rain would quit this afternoon and there's a slight chance of a brief shower tomorrow morning, nothing major. They said the sun would come out in the afternoon and it would clear up. So maybe we'll luck out and won't get too wet.

But you're right...temps in the 40's are ideal for a good, long run.

Phil's lucky he can walk and chew gum at the same time. Or even walk and do nothing else. And Phil is a lot fatter than that guy. If he could run like that, it would be a major accomplishment.

Many years ago, the funny part we left PITTsburgh at 9:30 PM the night before the race due to the High School cross country championship. I remember the trip like it was yesterday.. we drank Iron City 16 oz cans on the way down and the two seniors that ran in the championship(one an All American) were to run us in at the 16 mile mark to help push us to qualify for Boston... my buddy did and I ran a 3:02..

I have stopped doing road marathons. My last was philly in mid 2000s. Ever since been running ultramarathons in the mountains. So much better on the body. I feel 100 times better after 50 milers than I did road marathons.

Where do you run in the mountains? Do you travel to different parts of the country to say Arizona, Colorado, Blue Ridge Mountains?

I have traveled and either trained or raced in Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. I've raced everything from 50k to 100 milers. I'm looking to head out to Colorado or California in the near future.

In the last few years spent most of my time on the AT in Virginia, Smoky Mountains, Cumberlands, and tons of other state or national parks. I put in about 2,000 to 2,200 miles a year training and racing.

Impressive. That's a bit beyond my capabilities. I'm in my mid-60's and just took up running about 8 years ago. Now I do 10K, 10 mile, half and full marathons. That's about it. I wish I had started earlier so I could experience what you are doing.

I can promise you, even in your 60s you can run ultras. I know planets of men and women in their 50s and 60s running trails.

Trails are more forgiving and recovery time is so much faster than road marathons. If you can do a road marathon you can do a trail 50k.

I've got a 50 miler next weekend. Looking over the entrants plenty of 50 plusers signed up.

You guys are insane. I respect what you do. The most I ever ran at one time was 12 miles. I used to run 4-6 a day. Knees are shot. But the 26 miles.......no way. As much as anything, the time commitment to train for that has to be overwhelming.

All the training for months and the race is over in less than 3ish hours. That's why I prefer to be out there for 20 plus hours. Makes the months worth it. Plus you get to eat anything and everything for an entire day. In a 100 miler of eaten an entire pizza, burgers, veggie burgers, chicken breast, pulled pork, potatoes, coke, entire cantaloupe, grapes, strawberries, soup, and plenty of gels and energy bars.
