Who is on the post Steel Curtain era Mount Rushmore for Pittsburgh professional sports?

After last night hard to think Mario and Sid don’t take 2 of the 4 spots.

Steelers. Troy probably. Ben?

Pirates: Who has the nads to pick Bonds. But Cutch overall maybe? Skenes could replace him soon.

Mario, Sid, Malkin, Ben

I'm not a huge hockey guy but the gap between Crosby/Lemieux and the next guy is the size of the Atlantic Ocean, right? None of the other guys are considered top 5 ever in their sport.

Could any city match our post-90's Rushmore of guys who probably won't get into the Hall of Fame?

Antonio Brown
James Harrison
Hines Ward
Andrew McCutchen
Barry Bonds
------------------------
Hell, Brian Giles while he was here
James Farrior
Cam Heyward
Kirkland? Lloyd?
Gonna stop before I include Van Slyke, Bonilla, Drabek, and Jason Bay. but mostly those top five.

Cutch, Sid, Big Ben. hmmmm, need a 4th. Def not Harrison or Porter. Probably Troy..

That's my pick, Troy, Cutch, Sid, Ben..

Mario, Sid, Big Ben, Clemente

How is this even a discussion?

Not sure how much Clemente did after 1990, though. Probably rolled over in his grave a time or two when he saw Polanco out there in his old position tripping over himself.

Ok, missed the 1990 part. Haven't heard of a Mount Rushmore of the Decades. How about who is the 2024 Pgh Mt. Rushmore

Skenes, Hinson, James Franklin, and Terry Smith?

he rolled over a few more times when yinzers said that Jose Guillen was the next roberto clemente..

Speaking of Pirates who didn't pan out, I was watching a Harry Caray skit on SNL back in the day and the guest was a fake Jermaine Allensworth. I never did understand that, because he did almost nothing in the MLB. Like, how was he famous enough to be the subject of an SNL skit?

dude, years ago i was at a sales meeting with my former employer. we were in chicago area and went to some minor league baseball game. this wasnt even a triple a or double a game but some independent league, almost like a Washington Wild game but in chicago..

So im watching and sure enough, Allensworth comes up to bat. It was in Schaumberg i think, a suburb of chicago. this had to have been close to 20 years ago..

5 cups in the past 35 years is far more than anything the stillers or pirates have done so Sid and Mario are no doubters. Then Ben and Troy I guess.
I think Sid, Mario, and Ben are easy. Choosing number 4 is hard. Bonds won two MVPs with the Buccos, and arguably should have won a third, right?

bonds is tough because 99.9% of baseball fans identify him as a giant. Most people under the age of 40 probably dont even know he actually started his career in pittsburgh..

less than 20% of his home runs were hit as a pirate, less than 25% of his rbis..

I get that. But he played here for more than six seasons. And it is hard to argue he wasn't the best player in all of baseball for 3 of those.

Mario, Sid, Ben, and Bonds. I have Bonds here because everything he did as a Pirate was before he stated taking steroids. Look at Bonds head when he played for the Pirates and then playing with the Giants. With the Giants his head was enormous.

Schaumberg used to have a team in the Frontier League, so it was probably a team in the same league as Washington

Bonds didn't win a championship with the Bucco's, so he doesn't belong on it.

Mario, Sid, Ben, and Polamalu.

Shouldn’t you have been born in the United States to appear on Mount Rushmore?

McCutchen, Roethlisberger, Polanski, Brooks Orpik

Mario - had a run where he was the best in the NHL and had a career where he's top 5 of all time

Sid - see above

Jagr - had a run where he was the best player in the NHL and he's had a career where he's arguably a top 10 player of all time

Can any Pittsburgh athletes from 1990 going forward be considered the "best" in their league? Not position, best player..

Just think of what Mario and Sid’s stats would have been if they didn’t miss so many games due to injuries!

"Can any Pittsburgh athletes from 1990 going forward be considered the 'best' in their league?" Yes, Bonds is the other one.

Bonds might be the only Pirate you can say that about, other than Honus Wagner.

And if Mario took care of himself like Tom Brady did. Things I heard about him in regards to cigarettes and what not. Yikes.
Mario didn’t really take care of himself the way he should have. He did smoke when he was a rookie. He had every coach fired except Bob Johnson. When the Pens were practicing Mario would skate off before the practice ended and the whole team would follow. I know because I worked at the old arena back then and saw it first hand. I also remember the night of a game when Mario said he didn’t want to play. Paul Martha called him up to his office and threatened to beat the shit of him. Mario then suited up.

damn, you guys are right. Mario had some sick seasons even after 1990. as much as it pains me to say, my new Mt Rushmore.

Mario
Sid
Cutch
Big Ben.

im having a hard time with cutch over troy. I just think he was sooo instrumental in the pirates franchise, even though no world series were won.. and i LOVE Troy.. but def debatable.

I think TJ Watt was the best defensive player in the league for about 2 or 3 years. Since only QBs are allowed to win MVP he couldn't win that award but did win a DPOY and probably should have won a couple more. Same thing with Troy.

Mario, Jagr and Crosby are all top 10 all time in their sport. Ben might not even be top 10 for QB. Bonds left in 92. I guess the final spot could go to Polamalu or Woodson?
