OT: Refreshing comment by Mason Rudolph

Boos aren’t a big deal. Your offense stinks, you run off field after third down and fans boo. Is it really that upsetting??

5 minutes later, you score a TD and they cheer. Again, why anyone over there age of 12 would get upset about being boo’d is beyond me.

I like hearing that from Mason, but he still needs to play better. Doesn't step into enough throws and isn't willing to try threading it into any tight windows yet.

I think he will be fine but probably won't be more than an adequate game manager right now.

I think they can win with Rudolph and contend for a playoff spot next year and moving forward. Probably never a star but like his cap friendly contract. Going to need to spend some of that on the OL as their current group not getting any younger and beginning to slip.

You can't go cheap on quarterback in the NFL. You need a top 10 player in the league to win it all. We all love some value, but quarterback isn't the place to save cash.

I meant they can win now while he’s still under his rookie contract. That’s the formula for success these days, win when you have your QB cheap. After they sign that second contract any decent QB takes up a large percentage of your cap space at the expense of other needs.

Yep. But it’s also a position that can carry a price tag that can be an albatross if you don’t spend wisely. Flacco’s last contract is an example of that. He was coming off a good year, he needed a new deal, and there’s a market value for effective starting QBs. The Ravens has to pay, Flacco never reaches his prior form, and the Ravens were stuck.

Rudolph understands that booing is not personal. When it becomes personal (insults and harassment off the field) then that crosses the line.

I have booed my ass off at Tom Brady for years, but if I saw him out in the parking lot, I would shake his hand and ask for an autograph...

What is wrong with some of the fans in Pittsburgh? You have a guy who has started 5 games in his short career, and people already think his not a good QB.

Watch the young man when he's in the huddle, and at the LOS. He was going through all his reads, that's why he was taking to long to throw in some of those downs. You all do know, he check out of the play and called his own on the first TD? Mason has 9 tds and 3 int in his 5 games. The guy is playing very well.

You have to give the guy a real chance to see if he is the next in line. 5 games is not anywhere near enough to be making some of these statements. It's like some people just don't like the him, and don't want him to succeed so as not to prove everyone wrong, that Ben can be replaced, like everyone else. But everyone keeps talking about Duck. He played one game and wasn't that impressive, but everyone thinks he should be the man. All because he has that moniker going for him. Give me a break.

But...but...they're college kids!!!!!!!!
Personally I don't ever boo my own teams. But if I did, I'd feel way more comfortable booing the pro's vs. "college kids".

As a pro you've proven you're among the best and being amply compensated. Athletes that aren't at that level (sometimes way below) need as much help as they can get, and I think booing can really mess with their heads. Why would I do something that can potentially make things worse? JMO. Regardless, I reserve my booing for the officiating. ;)

I want to see Rudolph throw with a clean pocket. The Steelers linemen were on roller skates Monday night in pass protection.

Dude will improve as time goes on. You could see his comfort level improve as the game progressed. He will be better than a game manager. maybe not Top 6-8 in league talent, but they are not afraid to throw it downfield with him in there. He was a yard off on two bombs the other night. I honestly have zero worries about him. Its the health of the running game that will make or break the steelers this year.

He played mostly terrible in the first half and then started to heat in the late third and early fourth. The passes that were late and behind early on started being on time and in tight areas later. He clearly needed to work off rust.

I am not yet backing Rudolph as the QB of the future, but it is clear that he, at the least, is better than any backup that they have had for a long time. And, I think he likely should develop into being that Kirk Cousins, mid-level type starter.

It’s been so long that people forget that Ben was not an All-Star out of the gate. They won a lot because they had a dominant defense and a superb running game. They were able to really protect Ben and let him develop at the proper pace. Mason does not have quite the same advantages as the running game has been really spotty and the defense has taken a second to turn it up (though they look pretty solid since acquiring Fitzpatrick).

I actually think for the first run as the starter, Mason is doing much more complicated things than Ben did and looks more comfortable. But Ben was a rookie and he clearly had more physical tools.

I would encourage patience with this kid as maybe he becomes something worthwhile. At the least, he is competent. They look real 8-8 right now and their schedule lessens in 3 weeks where that looks pretty much like where they will be unless they turn it up the next 2 weeks.

The Steelers are in a tough spot.

Rudolph is good enough that he could be a bridge QB between franchise guys. And the rest of the team is good enough that they can probably flirt with the playoffs annually. But if they want a franchise QB they either need to get lucky with a team passing over a guy like Mahommes (How's Trubitsky working out, Bears fans?) or tank. And if they tank they need to get real bad.
