OT: Should Bernie Kosar have been fired from the Browns for betting on them(legally) to beat the Steelers?

Since Kosar is the subject, all I have to say is way to go Jackie for bypassing on recruiting Bernie when Foge urged you to do so.

Brilliant.

Here's a link to the article on Yahoo.

I think it's so hypocritical because the NFL makes a lot of money from the relationships of the sportsbooks.

Gambling on the NFL is heavily promoted by DraftKings and FanDuel.

Should Bernie Kosar have been fired from the Browns for betting on them(legally-but was more than likely a violation of the terms of his contract ) to beat the Steelers?

...there, I fixed it for ya.

He has no affect on the outcome of the game. He is not a player, nor a coach, nor in management. So no. If it is legal, it is legal.

you have no idea as to the terms of his contract...personally legal does not equal sans consequence in the workplace...ok, now all the Pete Rose defenders can chime int...

He's an employee of the organization, is he not? Isn't there a risk of insider trading-like issues if he bets on the team? I get that his position is less lofty than some on the team, but it still is a bad look and if you allow it, it could give the impression that the NFL game is corrupt.

It would be a worse look if he bet AGAINST the Browns. LOL

Why his college career was the best thing he ever did.

But as to the question, IMO no, the announcer has no influence on the game, so why not be allowed to bet.

Because he has ties and/or access to those who can possibly influence a game.

It’s a leap - I get it. But the NFL doesn’t play around with this stuff, right or wrong.

Other than promoting it during games :) :) :)
Certainly you recognize the difference of you or I betting as opposed to anyone affiliated with the NFL right?

I realize the NFL tried to distance themselves from gambling - laughably - for a long long time. But their stance on those affiliated has been pretty strong and consistent.

Sure, but they do advertise gambling during games, so certainly you recognize the hypocrisy of that.

im sure he is a mess of a human being and had many issues and the browns were looking for a reason to get rid of him. His drinking has been out in the open for years, i am sure he was on his last strike and they just used this as an excuse to fire him..

No. I don’t.

Employers have rules. Gambling is fine for anyone outside of anyone affiliated. For those in the inside, they don’t allow it. For good reason. If gambling is the priority go work somewhere else.

I think the NFL is full of baloney in a lot of areas. Don’t get me wrong. But I completely get the gambling policy for those who are in that world.

Honestly, america is more or less going to sh!t. We basically have no issues with anything that is bad or addictive to people if it makes people money. It really is an unethical bias, and if the NFL is ok with taking ad money from sportsbooks, and the Browns accept some of that revenue, then how the heck can you punish a guy from betting on his team.

My thoughts are, it should be strictly illegal, Bernie should be canned and barred from the NFL, and the NFL should never take a penny from sportsbookers. But, my thoughts mean zip, because the NFL already took the stance they value dollars more than integrity.

do you know how far down the nfl will go in popularity and ratings if you take away gambling on football games? seriously, ask your self if it wasnt for gambling or fantasy football, would you ever watch a non-steeler game (Or whatever team you root for).?

ratings would get cut in half, if not more..

The NFL as well other sports thrive on betting. It's a business and a corrupt one at that. This was going on years ago in 1919 with the Black Sox scandal. But let's take solace in Bernie getting fired since he is a Brown. Smh

I am free to smoke pot in many states but if I do and my employer tests me then I am toast by their rules.

I haven't bet on any individual games since the 80s, never did the parlay sheets since the 90s, quit playing fantasy football like 10 years ago, I still like to watch it.

Oh the lost generations of yinzers, I give you....Myron Cope and the terrible towel, Bob Prince and The Green Weenie...."Ya gotta believe"...As I often told my kids , "Santa Claus stops coming when you no longer believe in him", truer words were never spoken!
Yeah, the terrible towel, ...and a dozen hall of famers won the Super Bowl :)

Yeah, this isn't that hard to understand. He has a contract with an employer. That contract says that he is not allowed to bet on NFL games. Rather than just not bet on NFL games he went out and did a promotion for a sports book to celebrate gambling being legalized in Ohio by making what most people would consider to be a rather large bet.

He wasn't trying to hid it, he was promoting it. Consequences be damned.

Oops.
