  • A great jazz bass line
  • A camed out, V-8 with a carburetor, at idle
  • The purr of a cat
  • The roar of the crowd at a football game, when a big play happens
  • A high revving 2 stroke motocross bike (old school)

  • Mike Lange calling a Penguins' goal
  • A player saying, "Thanks, Coach!"
  • My car starting on a frigid cold winter day
  • The bass line in The Temptations' "My Girl"
  • My married daughter's voice on the phone or when she is walking into the house on an unexpected visit
  • The meteorologist saying, "The tornado watch has been cancelled"
  • My Yorkie excitedly yapping at me to get me to play with her
  • A cashier's voice directing me from the back of the line I am in to the new checkout lane she is opening up
  • The Pitt Band playing "Hail to Pitt!"
  • Slippin' Jimmy saying in a post loss press conference, "We are not elite."
  • Chris Peak's voice on his podcast
  • Anyone who says to me, "I'm buying!"
  • The sound of silence, when silence is sorely needed

1. Songbirds in the morning during spring.
2. The sound of “peepers” in late March after the winter snows have melted.

I remember when I was at Pitt and going to a Pirate game with some classmates to see the Bucs play the Astros and Nolan Ryan was pitching. There was a long rain delay and most people went home. The game resumed after some 2 hours and we were walking around the stadium and approached a security guard checking tx for seats behind home plate. We asked him if we could just get in to buy some Strohs beer ( only place you could buy it back then) ...long story short we ended up sitting behind home plate and even after this long delay Ryan was still pitching. Today they would shut the pitcher down to protect his arm but not then. We could hear the ball hit the catchers mitt with every pitch and never forgot that sound.....impressive.

This reminds me of a viral video I saw where some kids gave their mom a build-a-bear gift that had a recording of their grandmother's voice. Their mom really loved and cherished that gift.

I'm glad I remembered that video. I may also look into getting my cousin a bear with my aunt's voice.

Well then let me say what I don’t like the sound of when the stadium is mostly empty. —

Woo-ing

It’s annoying as hell and I’m embarrassed for the idiots who do it. How anyone could think it’s cool has me questioning human intelligence.

After reading these responses, I felt compelled to rate the "winners".

Gold Medal - Goes to the crackling sound of wood. A campfire is the most notable place you might here this, although there are others. The ambiance of crackling wood from a camfire yields one of the most relaxing atmospheres along with the warmth it does provide. I challenge anyone who claims to hate the outdoors, to spend an hour sitting by a campfire and see if their opinion might change.

Silver medal - Goes to the sound of someone else cutting my lawn. I have grown a little to old to enjoy it, and it is a great sound to hear someone else taking my mower for its every five day walk. I can remember times, before the Pittsburgh area somehow moved into the spring and summer monsoon area, where it was only necessary to take my mower for a walk once a month.

Bronze medal - Simply because I am a fisherman myself, is the sound of line being peeled off my reel. Steelhead fishing in the Erie tributaries is a great place to have this happen. That said, the best fight i ever had fresh water fishing was provided by a 30 pound king salmon I caught on Lake Ontario circa 1990. It took just over an hour to land this fish and he made several runs where he peeled more than 300 ft of line off the reel.

Agreed

Sounds I like:
  • Loon "singing" in the Northern lakes
  • Waves crashing along the rocks along the California Coast (Big Sur)
  • My wife's laughter
  • the woods at night off my back porch in the spring (lots of owls)

Along the same line of idiots, those stupid sounding vuvuzela horns (or, whatever those "humming" sounding horns are called) that were popular in the 80s, and I still hear on occasion watching games on TV. Usually bowl games.

I'm sure I would do something I wouldn't be proud of if someone used one near me at a game.

Not a big gambler, but damn if I don't get seduced by the tone of slot machines (slot machines use a major C chord, which is supposed to be psychologically pleasurable).

The sound in clemsons stadium after Blewitt kicks the game winning field goal

There is nothing quite like the sound of English fans singing during an EPL game than celebrate the winning goal.
