Minecraft, Sinners and Thunderbolts infused some much needed life into the box office. And, now, the summer blockbuster season is about to kick off. Which are you looking forward to most? Personally, I'm especially jazzed for Mission Impossible, F1 and Weapons. But, Supes and Fantastic Four both look promising. Naked Gun has a lot of potential to be a blast too. I listed everything I'm planning to see opening weekend.

May -
Final Destination Bloodlines
Lilo & Stitch
Mission Impossible Final Reckoning
Karate Kid Legends

June -
Phoenician Scheme
How To Train Your Dragon
28 Years Later
Elio
F1
M3gan 2.0

July -
Jurassic World Rebirth
Superman
Eddington
Fantastic Four First Steps

August -
Bad Guys 2
Naked Gun
Freakier Friday

I dont understand the viral teen trashing of movie theater trend with Minecraft. Someone has to explain that one to me.

Sigh. Yeah. Not a big fan of that stuff. Didn't appreciate similar audience reactions when the Gentleminions did similarly rambunctious stuff in theaters either. It's disappointing but not as widespread as folks make it seem. Glad that Minecraft is winding down. I don't foresee any similar trends with any of the summer movies but who knows?

Very much looking forward to Superman

I’m a Batman/Spiderman guy first but I got a feeling they are going to get the Superman vibe right with this. Having Krypto is already a good sign …

Fantastic Four looks like they may have finally got it right (4th try?) fingers crossed

James Gunn seems like a great fit to give Superman the right vibe. Loved what he did with Guardians, Suicide Squad (the good one that released during Covid) and Peacemaker.

This is the 3rd attempt on Fantastic Four. 1st attempt spawned 2 films, both earnest attempts but neither very good. The more recent one was a total failure. This latest take seems very promising. Loving the retro futurism vibes. Hope it delivers.

Well those old fantastic four movies were at a time when superhero movies were dumb and cheesy. Marvel studios has changed that.

That said, there’s nothing exciting about this one for me, other than it’s the direct lead-in to the next avengers film. The casting has underwhelmed and the characters don’t appear interesting to me. Really hope my perceptions are incorrect.

I like the aesthetic they're going for. Cast I like too. Director did most of WandaVision so he has style but not sure he can handle a blockbuster. Feels like a throwback to the Raimi Spider-man flicks.

F4 of the 2000s was around the same time as the Raimi Spider-man movies, X2, Batman Begins. All of which were just a cut above. I still think Spider-man 2 is maybe the best superhero anything. I'd say Batman Returns but that's more a Burton film than a superhero film.

Agree. James Gunn will make that work

Looks like a few interesting ones. I'm interested in all 4 of the July releases. Especially Eddington. And Superman was filmed in areas I'm familiar with, so it will be cool to see some of that. And I'm a sucker for Jurassic Park, so I'll see that one regardless of how it is reviewed.

The Phoenician Scheme looks interesting and I'm slightly intrigued by Liam Neeson taking over as Frank Drebin Jr. But hard to believe he will be as funny as Leslie Nielsen was.

I've liked what I've heard about the Superman plot. I don't think any of the Superman movies, except maybe the first Christopher Reeves one, got much right. Especially the villains. I'm a fan of people on earth as the villains, not aliens. That is why Spiderman and Batman are the best superheroes. Well written and developed villains. You can't have a good superhero without a great bad guy.

The notion of a "blockbuster" has sort of ruined summer movies for me. I'm spoiled by the quality of TV these days because it has more time to develop characters and story lines. And doesn't require blowing something up every 5 minutes. I'm hoping the Fantastic Four has more character development than most superhero movies because the interplay between the characters is the only thing that interesting about the Fantastic Four.

This thread is like the "Fun With Film" podcast with Howard Wolowitz and Dr. Sheldon Cooper live from Stuart's Comics.....

Well, I guess with TV that's the case. I still prefer the best movies over the best TV. TV lacks quotable images and visual storytelling. And, more than anything, has a bunch of even the good series that refuse to make any tough choices... So it becomes 12... 24... 36... 48... Episodes each an hour+ long of storytelling that just collapses in on itself and actuallydoesnt tell a very conpelling story. With that, I prefer anthology series to the long running ones.

But, anyway, Weapons, Eddington, Friendship, F1, Phoenician Scheme might fit what you're looking for this summer. Paul Thomas Anderson has a new one coming soon too.

I actually like the miles teller and Michael b Jordan one , not gonna lie .

The Sue storm casting is hot and a good actress so - that should help

Hope you’re right. The studio needs a huge bounce back and some momentum.

Regarding thunderbolts, the only thing that disappointed me about the film was the exclusion of Zemo.

It was the best marvel movie since guardians 3.
In the entire phase, only Guardians and thunderbolts were good. Half of the tv stuff I couldn’t even watch. And now they have a tv show upcoming about a character no one cares about that will bomb.

Although despite its troubles, Captain America Brave New World wasn’t as bad as what people are claiming. The hundred of millions spent on reshoots salvaged whatever problems it had.

My son saw brave new world - and said it was ok .

I really did like the Agatha series - it was really well done . Better than I expected, but I do love Catherine Hahn and Aubrey plaza .
The daredevil born again is great .

One I’m favorites was the first season of Jessica Jones. Kilgrave was a fantastic bad guy.

Speaking of that, that’s likely Marvels problem. Way too many storylines. Like way too many. What ever happened to Sharon Carter and the power broker thing? Scraped?
Yes. It is. That's why they're attempting to pare it down. Oversaturation. Lack of quality control. Got goofy.

Eh. Moon Knight, She Hulk, Agatha, Ms Marvel and the upcoming Ironheart (likely)…all hot garbage. I gotta give Daredevil a try. I made it through the first episode and never went back. And no one else is watching. She Hulk was probably the cringiest thing I’ve ever seen, next to Small Wonder and Joanie Loves Chachi.

Gonna disagree on a few of those
Moon knight and Agatha were really good
Ms marvel was a fun show
She hulk was fine - you just have to know she’s was Deadpool before Deadpool -
Breaking the 4th wall is the whole schtick .

It was the worst or that bunch but still a helluva lot better than the secret invasion trainwreck.

I've pretty much tuned out. Disney/Marvel/Star Wars, aren't interested in casual fans. I hate the whole tv shows with tie ins to future movies.

I assume you won't be seeing the new Batman either which undoubtedly reference HBO's The Penguin, right? Or, Superman which will almost definitely reference some stuff from HBO's Peacemaker, no?

I don't like it either but it's not just a Disney thing any longer unfortunately.

The penguin was amazing
Loved Peacemaker, too

I'll probably do the new Batman. The penguin is just one show. But if they keep adding on, I'll tune out. But I really liked the first one. Thought it was one of the best Batman movies. Better than 2 of the 3 Christopher Nolan ones. Nothing surpasses The Dark Knight though.

I wasn't aware of Peacemaker and its relevance to Superman. So maybe I won't be seeing Superman after all. I'll have to look further into this.
