OT: "The opening of the Pittsburgh Mothership, 1963"

Don’t remember the grand opening. Do remember going to one concert there: The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. Don’t remember if they did one Broadway show or a medley of songs from different shows. They opened the roof. That I do remember. Also went to a lot of Pittsburgh Hornets hockey games there before there were Penguins.

Saw the Who there the night before the stampede in Cincy. Same think almost happened as festival seating folks pushed their way in as soon as the doors opened.

Place had some ambience. 90 all star game, Mario chants still bring me goosebumps.

Never heard a louder, unified chant then that.

You should've heard the Mario chants after he scored on a breakaway in the final seconds of what we thought was his last game in the igloo in the 97' playoffs against Philly. I was at Stanley Cup games and even they weren't even close

I saw the Pittsburgh Gladiators play there with the roof open. It was billed as the first-ever outdoor arena game. In the history of man, I'd say this event is just a notch below the moon landing.
I was there during a championship/playoff game and during the Kate Smith singing God Bless America, they opened the roof about a quarter of the way. They had the lights off and when the roof cracked open, the late day summer sun just blasted the opposite side of the arena. You would have needed sunglasses over there. The PA announcer said "Welcome to the 1st indoor/outdoor arena football game. This was probably the same game.

Saw The Who show as well, roommate and I bought about 40 festival floor tickets, made some serious money. Got pushed to stage and think I singed my eyebrows from the flash pots. Also saw Buffett and when they played Ragtop Day they opened the roof. Wind kind of blew over some of the props.

And for the low lights...I saw the last Pitt / Duquesne hoops game there ... when they beat us.

And I saw a, yikes, Loverboy concert there. "She's turning on the heat... she's got the magic touch..."
