OT: The pace of baseball vs the Kentucky Derby...

Baseball needs a shot clock I mean a pitch clock.
Once you step in the batter's box you have to stay there for that pitch.
Relief pitchers must pitch to a minimum of three batters.

Churchill Downs spaces the races quite generously once they hit the afternoon on Derby Day. There is more than an hour between the race prior to the Derby and the race itself. Many don’t realize they actually start racing at 10:30 on Derby Day. No doubt it is to allow those on site time to wager and engage in the other activities. I went once, in the infield, last decade, and lines to bet were so long we made only two wagers. One was a multi-race wager into the Derby and we were fortunately live to 3 horses and set up to win thousands had we had the winner only to see a stunner (Giacomo, named for Sting’s son) pull off the upset. Think that wager paid $81k. Now, with online betting and a cellphone it wouldn’t be an issue.

They tried the pitch clock a few years back, IIRC. After awhile it just kind of faded away, kind of like the head shots in NFL early this year.

You know, I was at a Pirates game this week.......and something that we all have taken for granted for all of our lives, why is there this need to 2 minutes of tossing a ball around and throwing pitches between innings?

Same with warmups? Why is a guy throwing in the bullpen if he has to come out and then throw X number of warmup pitches?

And yeah, the stepping off and stepping out of the mound and box respectively is just ridiculous.

Warmups..... gotta get those 5-6 commercials in between each at bats.

I love pirates but if they aren’t on, I’d rather tear out my finger nails than watch a baseball game. Honestly, I can say the same about penguins and hockey too.

See.....that is how I know which sports I truly love.

If possible, I have watched every NHL playoff game when it is on. Again, if possible. I just think the NHL playoffs is such great drama and intensity. Obviously, I am really a hockey fan, not just a Penguins fan.

Baseball? I am hard pressed to watch any baseball game, except the Pirates. Even the playoffs, I will occasionally switch but its length and the ridiculous pitching changes, switches, shifts, baseball is almost unwatchable from start to end, especially the post season games.

College Football. For the most part, I can watch any game that is on. To a point. Especially love if it is a nondescript game when the weather is bad (snow) which makes it fun. But yeah, Clemson/Auburn? Sign me up. Texas/Oklahoma, I am there. But I will also watch Mississippi/LSU doesn't matter.

NFL? Steelers obviously, and playoffs definitely. After that, decent matchup on Sunday Night or Monday Night? Maybe. But in many cases, it is just background noise.

College Hoops. There was a time it was must see TV. The One & Done hording by a few teams has hurt the sport IMO, as is the One and Done, it is hard to follow teams. But yeah, will watch, especially if it has relevance to Pitt/ACC.

NBA. I try Ski, I do. NBA playoffs are better, this year even better as it is not fait accompli it seems though the Warriors are still in it. But to sit down and watch Portland/LA on a regular season? No way. can't do it.

Soccer? I actually like and get into International play. I don't follow any of the Premier or US leagues, so I get really nothing out of watching them. Again, only can have so much bandwith.

Golf? Yeah, I am a golf geek. Excited for the PGA. Will pretty much any match that is on in regards to the PGA tour, but the majors are special.

I think that one thing that goes here, there is only so much bandwidth we have to devote attention to these sports.

Older I get, the less I like sports. Take away my local Pittsburgh team and I cant watch NFL, College hoops, baseball or hockey. I can watch me some college football like no other,. I too love golf..

I don't know what's going on with me. i'd say im evolving as a human being and my tastes for how I choose my time is evolving as well but that's so far from the truth. I spend hours watching threes company and MST3k so I really cant tell you im becoming this intellect who refuses to spend time in front of the TV.

My baseball exposure now is limited to sports center highlights of the games. So of course that includes mostly the dingers that are hit. And the curious/ annoying thing i notice from that is that almost every single home run is followed by a theatrical posturing and extreme bat flipping. Even HR that barely just make it over the fence. Which leads to me to actually give credit to pitchers for not beaning more guys than i hear about happening. Oddly, if that happened, i'd be apt to watch more games...

steigerwald has article in trib detailing the decline of the sports fan in today's time. stats about younger people not having the attention span, them streaming stuff on phone, blah blah. older people are die hard fans of their team, younger people could care less and root for players, not teams, young people don't want to watch tv for 3 1/2 hours, etc.

Pretty much what we know but it's a decent read.

Oh yeah me too. I watch more History shows, Food/Travel shows, things like that. I am not into the Political shows because as we see in the Locker Room it is just Tic Tac Toe......

Last night, late, wasn't tired...I watched on MTV Classic 120 minutes. It was like I was back in college and in my 20's. It was great.

One thing I do laments, is these networks today, all of them have effing shows, I turn on the Weather Channel for weather and I see icebergs collapsing in Antarctica, MTV no longer shows videos, History rarely shows history, Food Networks rarely show real chefs cooking or better, restaurants that I would like to go to.... What the bleep?

Baseball was a boring sport to play as a kid - even when I played catcher, and was involved with every play on defense. When I played left field, I was, as the joke goes, out in left field.

History channel showing nothing but ancient alien, ice road truckers, and pawn shop shows... major aggravation. It used to be a really good channel.

I agree. they need some new shows. these shows every episode are the same thing. even American pickers which I liked has grown very stale. just so many ways you can go with these shows before you are doing the same story line over and over..

Loved baseball as a kid, played in college, the whole nine yards. But now I haven’t watched a game the Pirates weren’t playing in for over 20 years. Yesterday I did watch the whole pirate game, after I watched an entire English soccer match. Hockey was once a passion of mine, but I’ll likely never watch another NHL game the Pens aren’t playing in. Maybe I’ll watch the cup final if it’s on, just like I’ll do with the NBA Finals. The only sports I can watch these days in a regular season game that doesn’t involve my team is EPL, NFL, NCAA hoops and football.

And sports center? Haven’t watched it since I converted to an iPhone in 2009 or 2010.

Is threes company on cable? If so, where? I may have to set my DVR to automatically record every episode

I'll admit the ice road trucker thing had some initial interest. But how many shows can you have with the storyline either "ohhhhn noooooo, will frozen lake stay frozen before the rig gets over it?" Or "ohhhhh noooooo, is he going too fast for the icy conditions and cause a jackknife???"

it's like Bar Rescue, a show I used to like. Kitchen is filthy, wait staff sucks and the owner is a drunk. Every episode, same thing.

I've really gotten to the point that I have favorite teams in every sport and watch only their games, I do watch some of other games, like the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl, But in general if my favorite teams aren't playing I can't watch, and the quality of play means nothing, Like I've become a DC United fan, so I'd rather watch that than the Premier League, don't care about the quality of the play. I might watch a game 7 in the NHL or NBA Finals, like when Cleveland won a couple years ago. I do watch some international soccer including UEFA CL or Europa and USANT. But like this year in the NHL, I hate all of the final 4 teams, since they can't all lose I can't watch, lol. "HOW GOOD" the games are doesn't matter. But I religiously follow my favorites, find their TV schedules and DVR every one or watch online when available. But baseball, Pirates are my favorite, so I watched their playoff games, and no other games since 1992.

Pretty much what we know but it's a decent read.

John has become an unfunny Archie Bunker parody. Truthfully, younger people could care less about what he thinks and will easily outspend his generation for entertainment.

Sounds like a real change-up from him. I'm sure that piece is packed full of facts and statistics too.

I agree with his politics and even I find him boring to tears. he is on one of the AM stations and I've tried and it's rough.

there are a lot of statistics actually. the topic really isn't that exciting, just relevant to this thread and I saw it today. again, nothing earth shattering, link below if you care to read. Spoiler alert, it wont change your life.

Interesting. My daughter often watches a movie on her iPhone, even if the 40" TV is available? I think that's stupid, but oh well. And I agree that the long game times are getting irritating, I've quit watching baseball period for 30 years, so I don't care, but NFL, I wish they'd cut the game time to 2 hours like soccer, specifically get rid of replay and make penalty flags almost non-existent, get rid of useless rules and instruct refs to have a super high standard for throwing flags. As for replay, I may be like the young people, IT'S JUST ENTERTAINMENT. JUST A TV SHOW, I'd rather get a few wrong rather than sit through replays that nullify FUN PLAYS.
