i am posting the breaking news story from last year. Since then, I suspect many of you have heard about this terrible story out of Pam Beach / Jupiter Fla.....

http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/26/us/florida-missing-teens-boat/index.html.

It is my understanding that the boat and some of the personal belongings have been found but not the kids.

here is my question (s). What parent would let their 14 year old kid go out unsupervised on a boat fishing in the Atlantic Ocean? It appears these kids were experienced fishermen...and knew how to handle a vessel. But for Gods sake....they are 14 years old.

My second question for the lawyers here. Is there not a certain negligence on the parents? I dont know that answer...... But my God........they werent fishing on Lake Arthur in Butler County....

Anyone??

For some reason they had no idea how violent mother nature can be.

if you've ever lived in- or spent any extended time in SE,FL-the atlantic ocean/ bays ,and inlets, are a style of life. sort of like all terrain vehicle up north . children go out in the water beginning in their infancy-and the ocean becomes a way of life. the children were too young to drive, but used the boats in place of getting about/socializing.. secondly, has it been established that the children had the full permission of their parents to use the boats-and were all concerned appraised of the trip plan. just saying.

Fair enough but I remember the parents saying they gone fishing many times on their own! You have to protect your children and not thinking that something can go wrong miles out at sea is too naive in my mind.

I agree with the OP. I hate to judge another parent's decision but to me, letting a couple of kids go out on the Atlantic Ocean all by themselves seems completely crazy, perhaps even negligent.

The Atlantic Ocean is a very treacherous habitat and I'm not sure how many 14 year-old kids are ready for it - even if they've successfully negotiated it many times before.

in this day and age of parents getting arrested for letting their kids walk across the street, im sure they will face some charges.. Just read an article today about a mother in Canada getting visit by the child services because she had a 10, 5 and 2 year old outside, unsupervised. Here is the catch, they were in their yard, fenced in yard, while she was in kitchen. Unreal. I was 9 and took trolley to civic arena to meet older bro (he was student at duquesne) for Cuse v Pitt hoops game. after game, took trolley home by myself. Great freakin game by the way, 1986.

People suck. over protective parents are jerkoffs who raise loser kids.. Used to have kid in neighborhood who had to ask his mom before leaving his yard. I swear kid was like 9 or 10 and couldn't leave yard without talking to his mom.. That's what causes bullies, any kid in his right mind has to make fun of him for that. Had the mom been normal, let the kid breathe and be a kid, we'd never had made fun of him.. If you are a parent and you make your 8 or 9 year old kids ask you permission before leaving their yard, you're a loser and your kid will grow up to be a helpless pathetic wimp..

What were we talking about, kids on boats? Oh yeah, that's messed up..

This happened back in July 2015 and the parents haven't and wont be charged with anything. The kids operated a 19 ft boat equipped with an outboard. They apparently went out a lot to fish but were to stay in the Loxahatchee River and intercoastal waterway which is like a river in Jupiter. Even the ocean at the entrance to the Juputer inlet is ok. This is what the parents said they ok'd.

I find it interesting that some of you think "shore" kids don't do this. Lots of kids who grew up near water, bays, or oceans do this at an early age after being properly trained. These kids were trained for the river and intercoastal trip but not for the ocean leg of the trip. In Fl there's no minimum age for operating a boat.

The big mistake. They went out the inlet and were traveling to a secret fishing spot way offshore and ran into bad weather. Big no no for boaters with little ocean experience. As a boater we all know weather changes fast on the ocean so a weather radio or weather radar is imperative. Now if the parents ok'd that part of the fishing trip there could have been problems for the parents but both sets of parents denied knowing this. Except the kids fueled up the boat with $ 110 of gas prior to going out so where did they get the money??

When you travel out an inlet to the ocean in a boat that size all hands must have type 1 lifejackets ON with water activated strobe lights, the boat should have an EPIRB locator beacon ( it didn't), GPS unit ( not sure no report on this), permanent mount and handheld floatable marine radio, floatable cushions, white distress strobe light, and orange distress flags.

One of the keys to survival is to stay with your boat if its disabled or capsized. If they didn't have type 1 lifejackets on ( designed for ocean conditions) it would be impossible to stay with the boat. Its also near impossible to put a lifejacket on after a crisis happens.
Rescuers can find a boat easier than finding people in the ocean and they did find the boat. Had the kids followed boating basics they'd be alive today!

Not knowing much more than what has been reported previously and currently about this story, but I'm giving the parents a pass here. Pretty dang clear that the bond between the children and parents was very strong. I'm satisfied that although I don't understand the culture of raising kids on the water, they had a loving and supportive relationship. Clear distinction between that and true child endangerment IMHO.

Our kids were raised on boats ranging from 16 -35 ft.
When you raise kids near or on the water the good news is they'll never be afraid of the water, and the bad news is they'll never be afraid of the water.
The key is that they never lose respect for the water and practice what they were taught even as they get older.
The kids are 30 and 28 and to this day the wife and I remind them of things when we know they're going out on the water.
