What's up with people who went to Pitt thinking Uncle Sam's is good or better than average?
Because it is.What's up with people who went to Pitt thinking Uncle Sam's is good or better than average?
I thought it was fantastic. To each his own. What's up with people who went to Pitt thinking Uncle Sam's is good or better than average?
I don't even think it's the best in Oakland rnNot as good as a cheesesteak from Philly but as good of one that you could get in Pittsburgh.
RIP Oakland Uncle.
It was OK, but couldn't touch G's when it was still G banging out the cheesesteaks. I've had plenty of Philly cheesesteaks, not just the tourist places, and G's was as good as any of them. What's up with people who went to Pitt thinking Uncle Sam's is good or better than average?
There was no other cheesesteak in Oakland, unless you are playing fast and loose with the definition of a cheesesteak.I don't even think it's the best in Oakland rn
What was G's?It was OK, but couldn't touch G's when it was still G banging out the cheesesteaks. I've had plenty of Philly cheesesteaks, not just the tourist places, and G's was as good as any of them.
Awesome insight. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the good sandwich places in Oakland and/or the east endI'll never get it lol
You're all the same
G's was the sandwich place appended to Mitchell's at Center and Craig, late '80s. It was rumored that Mitchell's and G had some falling out, and Mitchell's tried to replicate G's under some other name. It wasn't the same. What was G's?
Spent 4 years and Philly, and the only cheesesteak outside the city that I've had that was close was one place in the the Mission district in San Francisco which flew in Amoroso rolls every week.
I’m remembering Charlie’s? Had a good burger.G's was the sandwich place appended to Mitchell's at Center and Craig, late '80s. It was rumored that Mitchell's and G had some falling out, and Mitchell's tried to replicate G's under some other name. It wasn't the same.
Mitchell's itself now also appears to be closed.
Yes -- G's became Charlie's. I had forgotten the name. It was still pretty good, but better when it was G's.I’m remembering Charlie’s? Had a good burger.
East End.Awesome insight. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the good sandwich places in Oakland and/or the east end
Gs also had tremendous dry rub wings too if I remember correctly.G's was the sandwich place appended to Mitchell's at Center and Craig, late '80s. It was rumored that Mitchell's and G had some falling out, and Mitchell's tried to replicate G's under some other name. It wasn't the same.

Lol I just ate at Uncle Sams in Robinson today. I always make a point to go when I'm out that way for work. Just as good as I remember in my college days. What's up with people who went to Pitt thinking Uncle Sam's is good or better than average?
Uncle Sam’s is better than Angelo’s and it’s not even closeEast End.
Angelo's with everything
I'm just bustin balls.
It just always comes up on Twitter.
Not going to Pitt it wasn't a place I thought highly of in life.
It was just 2 years ago that I found out how much it's absolutely loved
It was a rent issueLol I just ate at Uncle Sams in Robinson today. I always make a point to go when I'm out that way for work. Just as good as I remember in my college days.
Can't believe the one in Oakland closed.
There are wiz purists....it is the traditional, but I prefer American myself. But I was never afraid to get one of each. American is an acceptable substitute. I probably averaged 2-4 a steaks a week when I lived in Philly. I'd go to one cart to get the best steak in my neighborhood (west philly) and to another and get the best chicken cheesesteak....conveniently only one block away from each other). Steak Queen was my go to cart for Cheesesteaks but I can't remember the name of the cart I'd get my chicken cheesesteak at.i always thought they were really good, but i love cheese steaks.
With traditional philly cheesesteak labels, doesnt it have to be with cheez whiz or something to be considered "philly style?" It's been years if not decades since i've had an Uncle Sams but i believe they used either white american or straight provolone cheese..
again, im far from an expert on the "philly chz steak" definition. I do know there was a place on carson street years ago, probably early 2000's that was "philly style" and what stuck out at me was the use of Cheese Whiz.. Think it was on 19th or 20th, down almost by smoking joes but across the street..
personally, give me a warm bun, white american with peppers and grilled onions every day. no clue if that negates the philly style lable but im ok with that..
My understanding was that the Oakland Sam's failed a health department inspection and the ownership decided it wasn't worth renovating to fix the issues. The location in Squirrel Hill still exists, but I haven't been to it in years. It was a rent issue

We'll agree to disagree thereUncle Sam’s is better than Angelo’s and it’s not even close
Angelo’s is 3 miles from house and I’ll drive across the bridge for uncle Sam’s in Aspinwall
What’s to disagree ?We'll agree to disagree there
Of all my regular spots from school, only Hemingways and Bootleggers still exist. I graduated 10 years ago.Love ‘em or hate ‘em (and I honestly was lukewarm on most) but disappearance of ‘institution’ places like Uncle Sam’s, the O, Peter’s, Mitchell’s et al over the last decade are blows to Pitt’s “greater campus”. Things always change of course, but most schools have select places like these that alumni can count on being there year after year every time they return for a visit. What remains in Oakland that falls into that category these days? F&F? Dave and Andy’s? Heaven forbid, Primanti’s?
Italian and steak with everythingWhat’s to disagree ?
Name one sub at Angelo’s better than uncle Sam’s .
I worked in Bloomfield for about 5 years recently
I like Angelo’s -
But I’d get Uncle Sam’s or fatheads preferentially
I agree uncle Sam’s is far betterItalian and steak with everything
Not even close
Charlie’s wasn’t badYes -- G's became Charlie's. I had forgotten the name. It was still pretty good, but better when it was G's.
Yeah. Hemingway’s was there too in the 80s when I was an undergrad so maybe it qualifies. However, Hemingway’s was much different when I was there, it was kind of a foo-foo place. Nice for a dinner date, but nobody went there to drink or hang out.Of all my regular spots from school, only Hemingways and Bootleggers still exist. I graduated 10 years ago.
Yeah and you're way wrong lolI agree uncle Sam’s is far better
And I’ve had both
I went to Pitt in the early to mid 1990s and Hemingway’s was where your parents and professors went. It was way more “upscale” than other places on campus. It was nice inside.Yeah. Hemingway’s was there too in the 80s when I was an undergrad so maybe it qualifies. However, Hemingway’s was much different when I was there, it was kind of a foo-foo place. Most underrated-their cheeseburger hoagieThere was no other cheesesteak in Oakland, unless you are playing fast and loose with the definition of a cheesesteak.
Hoagie does not = cheesesteak. Uncle Sams wasn't exactly a traditional Philly one either.
