OT: UNLV and NFL Raiders Exploring Vegas $1B Stadium Build

NFL in vegas would be cool. Big mistake why? Gambling? Please, nfl exists because of gambling, thrives from it. You think anyone on this planet is watching a Browns vs Lions game in December if they didn't have money on it? Fantasy football is gambling btw..

Great road trip, small market but plenty of money in area.. No brainer. Beats putting one in LA where no one cares less about football.

I agree, I don't see why gambling would keep the NFL out of Las Vegas. Gambling is basically everywhere now

Yeah, there is kind of a giant casino next door to Heinz Field and the new stadium in LA is tearing down a casino on the property and building a bigger, better casino next door to it.

Its not Gambling that's the problem....
it's SPORTS Gambling that's the problem.
-so the comments about Rivers and other casinos near arenas/stadiums is irrelevant.

If you recall there was a huge blowup over NJ trying to allow sports gambling... and the NFL flipped out.

it's illegal.
sooo ur point doesn't make sense.

I take it you realize there are both kiosks and stand alone sportsbooks all over London and next to the stadium right? The NFL doesn't give a crap morally about sports gambling, they just want to make sure they get their cut.

I think Las Vegas is a perfect fit for the Raiders - absolutely perfect.

If they build a $1 billion football stadium in Las Vegas you can be sure that will guarantee them things like major concerts, major bowl games, Final Fours, Super Bowls, etc.

I can't fathom a city better set up to handle things like that than Las Vegas, Nevada. New Orleans is pretty cool and the location of the Superdome relative to the French Quarter is pretty much perfect. That's the only one that would even be close.

I think the worries about gambling and gamblers getting to the players, coaches or officials is a very antiquated point of view. As others have said, in 2016, Las Vegas isn't much different in that regard than Pittsburgh or Miami or Dallas.

I still think the Raiders belong in Oakland. However, they are playing in the worst stadium in the NFL. If Oakland can't or won't build a new stadium for the Raiders, I think this is a fabulous solution to that team's problem and I hope it happens.

Las Vegas has no problem building arenas that don't have tenants yet. The new T-Mobile arena that is expected to house an NHL team is set to open in April. The first event is scheduled to be the opening of the Guns n Roses tour, followed by MMA, boxing, and hopefully an NBA franchise someday. Coach K has expressed an interest in having Duke play in the first college basketball game played there.

I have no doubt there will be an NFL franchise in Las Vegas, just doubts that it will be in the next 20 years. The gambling concerns are silly, and anyone who espouses them are uninformed. Las Vegas has been the #1 watchdog for identifying attempts at fixing/point shaving games for decades. The amount of money bet legally in Nevada is a mere pinprick compared to the amounts wagered illegally with locals and especially offshore.

The problem with Las Vegas as a site for pro sports is that it has a high amount of turnover in its residents. People live there for 5-10 years and move on. These people are already fans of other teams - Broncos, Cowboys, Steelers, etc. - and aren't likely to abandon those teams en masse when living in Las Vegas for a short amount of time. It would be great for visiting fans who could likely always get cheap flights and cheap hotels and usually get (comparatively) cheap tickets. I just don't see the city generating the necessary fan support to keep a team there.

To be fair, I guess some of those challenges would be mitigated if you're moving an already established team like the Raiders. I would find something else to do with my Sundays if the Steelers moved.
