Just wondering. Is there such a lack of programming? Is ESPN putting "sports movies" on now? I never remember them airing a movie like that especially in prime time. They used to do some original movies and series like that Bobby Knight movie and Playmakers but never an old Hollywood film like Dodgeball.

Other than college football games in season, I couldn't tell you what programming any of the ESPN channels has.

Maybe there are enough like me, that they are trying anything to get some viewership outside of college football season.

They might as well air people playing Fortnite, Madden, FIFA, and 2K. Sadly, the ratings would be outstanding.

They were doing a block of programming around "ESPN The Ocho". Things such as axe throwing and miniature golf. The movie was part of that promotion.

It couldn't be any worse than cornhole and bowling. I remember them having some generic pro wrestling league on there in the 90s.

It was preceded by an actual dodgeball competition of some sort, so I guess that was the connection. Don't know if that's something ESPN puts on as a schtick or it's been a real thing for years. Movie is still funny, although I was out at a bar and wasn't listening to the dialogue.

Off the top of my head, Dodgeball, Major League and Bull Durham are the best sports comedies that I can think of. Been meaning to rewatch Major League for some time. Some great casts in those movies, as well.

I’m in the minority here and think dodgeball wasn’t terrible but not funny either. Rip Torn was good in it though.

Major league, bull Durham were classics.

"Why was that Dodgeball movie on ESPN2 the other night?" Because ESPN likes to make money and they thought showing that movie would make them some money. It's really not any more than that.

A long time ago they showed sports movies on ESPN pretty regularly. The MLB network shows baseball movies in the off season all the time. It's cheap programming that they can make money off of at a time when they don't have a lot of original programming to show, as evidenced by the fact that they show so many of those Little League baseball games.

In the movie DODGEBALL, the main game was aired on a fictional channel, ESPN 8 -- the Ocho. On-air personalities at ESPN have referenced it many time over the years, so ESPN decided to "create" the channel for a few days in the summer where they would air off-the-wall events.

They put those events on ESPN 2, since the "Ocho" doesn't actually exist. That's why the movie was airing on ESPN 2. That movie created the Ocho.

Personally, I think it's awesome. ESPN usually takes itself too seriously, and this was a way for them to get back to their early days of off-the-wall programming.

I actually think it was part of a legit dodgeball game that was airing on ESPN. They are now covering dodgeball and corn hole.

I only watch actual games I'm interested in....no talk shows or "documentaries". Dodgeball isn't a real sport, is it? Of course, cornhole and darts now have "league" contests on the air. Next up: The Parcheesi Channel.

I haven't watched ESPN on 20 years. Tired of the same old boring schtick of covering 3 sports and for teams with 90 percent of their programming being stupid people screaming their mindless opinions.

I loved ESPN when it was the CFL, Auzzie football, lumberjack Olympics and that Gaelic game where everyone is running around swinging clubs at each other.

Was a helluva comeback by the US team vs Canada. Horrible sport for tv though, too tough finding good camera angles.

With you on this. Didn't think much of Dodgeball. I've seen Bull Durham about 50 times.

The wrench throwing scene was classic . R.I.P. Rip .

It's saving features are:

1) Christine Taylor.
2) The wrench throwing scene.
3) It is literally the only role Vince Vaughn should ever be casted for - breezy nice guy with zero expectation of artistic performance.
