I think I came up with an interesting idea that could fix the NBA All-Star game and I don't know where to direct that energy so I figured this is as good a place as any lol. I'd like you guys to help me workshop it (constructively, please). I'm hoping that this would increase the effort and excitement, while also keeping the injury risk relatively low. I'm looking for all of you bball nuts like me to have some fun with this to help save a piece of the sport that SHOULD matter but really doesn't anymore.
So the basic idea is to combine the Ryder Cup concept with pickup basketball. The selection process would work as it currently does. Then the leading vote-getters would be the captains of their conference team. I don't know what to do about the distinction between "starter" and "reserve" that we currently have because for my idea this won't really matter. However, I do think it is important to make a distinction between those voted in and those chosen by the coaches. So if you have an idea about it, please share.
Once the rosters are selected, the 12 players generally breakdown like so (using this year as an example):
Guards: 4-7
Bigs: 5-8
These are obviously very broad terms that depend on skillset along with size but I think this establishes enough of a basis as you continue reading. Each captain would then have to select matchups for the following pickup games. The leading vote-getter could chose second in this scenario, so they have the advantage of seeing the other team's submissions. Or they could submit them independently and make them public at the same time. I'm indifferent on this aspect.
Game 1: 1v1
Game 2: 2v2
Game 3: 3v3
Game 4: 2v2
Game 5: 1v1
Game 6: 2v2
Game 7: 1v1
I don't know what the best order is for the games or really what the appropriate number of 1v1s, 2v2s, and 3v3s should be. The above would be my suggestion, obviously. Each game would probably have to be worth a certain number of points so that it isn't mathematically possible for a conference to win before game 7. Playing these simultaneously would be out of the question. I'm not totally sure how to approach this aspect.
Each game would be played on a half court to 11 points, 17 points, 21 points...doesn't really matter to me, it's just a matter of what would be an appropriate game length (it could also differ depending on the size of the game). Baskets inside the paint would be 1 point, outside the paint would be 2 points, and outside the arc would be 3 points. For ease of scoring, this determination would have to be based on where the player left the ground. on the shot. The team would need the exact right number of points to win or else you go back to a certain score. Offensive rebounding is allowed but all NEW possessions (meaning the other team gained clear possession of the ball) would need to start from outside the line that's used for the coaches box. We could use the arc too but I think it would make it a bit more interesting if the teams couldn't just kick it out to the corners for quick and easy 3s too often.
I'm not quite sure what to do about fouls. It wouldn't be the honor system because they have professional referees that could rotate the games. But is it best to shoot foul shots like normal? Do something a little different? Which rules are relevant for the referees to use when determining a foul? Looking for your opinions here.
In terms of player motivation beyond pride (which I think they'd actually have a decent amount of already in this format), each player(s) that wins their game gets a payout. Then the winning conference gets an additional payout.
Additionally, because the actual game is gone now, each rostered player could be required to participate in a Friday or Saturday event (skills, 3pt, dunk, maybe a new one). Since they're not committing to playing an entire game on Sunday, I think this is fair and would definitely create more interest in the other events too.
So yeah - I was really bored and struck by an epiphany, so I figured I'd try to start an interesting brainstorm with you guys. Which parts do you like? Which parts would you change/improve? Is there any significant aspect I didn't already mention that would need to be addressed?
