The US has been the top non-host ticket-buying country for many cycles now. It was actually 2nd to Russia for the 2018 WC in Russia despite not qualifying. Clearly, many of these tickets are being purchased by Americans, who are not ALL USMNT fans as many root for their country of their birth or parent(s)/grandparent(s) birth. That said, its still pretty amazing. Another reason why I have always said if the US had a world-class soccer league, it would surpass MLB and challenge the NBA for the #2 league in this country.

Maybe like in college football, we should always get an automatic bid because "we travel well'. That's more important than being good at the sport.

honestly, if im a host country, i absolutely want the US in it with how we travel. that's a lot of tourism dollars..

This is going to be a complete human rights shit show. I wish these countries boycotted these games.
these countries arent dumb. they know when the spotlight is on them such as hosting a world cup, these strict rules they have, enforcement will be lax if not at all void.. they arent going to be arresting women who has a beer in her hand and not walking behind their husband or throw two American men in jail for life if they are holding hands walking to the game..

Fascinating! If I did not know any better I would think the USA had a least 100 million more people than the next closest in population on that list...

The US number is no doubt helped by its population and the fact that many ticket buyers with US addresses are a) not American (ie just living or working here temporarily) or b) not USMNT fans. That said, USMNT fans travel about as good as anyone. And even if Mexican or German or whatever fans are buying these tickets but have US addresses, it still shows you that there are enough soccer fans in this country that could make a world-class domestic league rival the NBA

Oh my. Wanna bet?

The guy I know who is going is staying on a cruise ship. I think it’s the way around the laws on alcohol. He said they can drink and fornicate all they want on the ship.

Worst World Cup ever. No booze or porn and 5 am
Games. Yeah for lots of dead Tibetan day workers
Swept under the rug and no out
Homosexuals allowed. Freedom!

This is funny. Does he really have the US going to the quarterfinals, but then losing to Serbia? Is that what flag that is? And he has them in the final?

I’ve been to Qatar a few times and never had any trouble there. Beer and wine was free flowing, too. Especially for the conference I attended that Qatar Airways hosted In Doha.

Hey boys…..I am on my way to Qatar. Looking forward to the trip and I will check in. PITT win on Saturday and USA on Monday!

I just love when corrupt authority just does what they want to serve their own interests and thumbs their nose at the people.
WHO KNEW?? Who knew this would happen? I can't wait to see what happens next. I hope they start imprisoning journalists and fans and maybe a player or two.

These countries should ban together and protest and not play. This is going to be every bit the shitshow I thought it was going to be.

For the record, the entire world was against this and saw it for what it was when Qatar was first announced. Even before announced, there was uproar, but the FIFA cronies didn’t care and they just wanted their kickbacks.

In any event, will players get arrested for hugging each other after goals? That will be something g to watch out for. Lol.

Why is a country corrupt because they want to eliminate the #1 leading factor (alcohol) to hooliganism/fan violence at soccer events? I'd love to have a beer and watch the game but it is not why we are there....this is their culture and we need to respect it.

My comment was about FIFA.

The problem was they agreed to allow alcohol sales when they completed the bid and negotiations. Then they made an 11th hour announcement to ban it.

But, it looks like they caved to the pressure and just announced they will allow beer sales again.

No. Wrong. It is a world event and they need to accept what fans (tourists) want to do. If not, don't host. Are you backwards?

So you think they should turn their back on all religious beliefs for tourists?

If you are going to host an event like that?? Yes. Absolutely. If you aren't accepting of others and want tourists, then you shouldn't have bid to host. (and honestly should have never been given)

Exactly. They knew beer sales were part of the deal when they accepted the host role years ago. Now, 2 days before the event, beer sales are against their religion. Too bad, you made an agreement.

And Americans wonder why they are hated around the globe. It's people like you that give America a bad name.

Yeah, damn you Americans for thinking that people should be free to make choices for themselves and that people should follow the agreements that they made and the contracts that they signed in order to be allowed to host an event.

Too bad the government can't throw all those mean ol' Americans in jail. Or better yet, shoot a few of them and to remind the rest of them who is in charge.

I don’t know what globe you have been around, but I have traveled in Europe quite a bit, and have not found Americans to be hated anywhere. There are times when people are not happy with the US government, but that does not translate into hatred of Americans.

it’s the flip flopping and changing at the last second that is the problem. Had they placed this as a condition of the bid in the first place, no problem (though they likely wouldn’t have gotten the bid in the first place)

I‘ve traveled a lot through the Middle East and have always thought of Qatar as pretty middle of the road as far as Muslim countries are concerned, in terms of alcohol, dress, religion, etc. Countries like Malaysia, Turkey (mostly), Indonesia on one side. Saudi, Iran, Syria, to an extent Brunei on the other. UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, etc more in the middle.
