I think I found my niche here, especially since DT has gone into hiding/mourning, so where it merits, I will do my "Deep Breaths" bullets. I know you all will love them. Or not......

1) The Press Conference was a travesty. Some of you wanted blood. You got it at the very start. Why? Why do you want to make Barnes, Stallings and therefore Pitt itself look bad? I guess this sated some anger, but why? Why? Cause we didn't hire Sean Miller? Or we didn't hire some young stud, Greg Marshall, etc....or was it the realization that this job isn't as good as we all thought it would be? And yesterday's press conference showed another reason why it isn't as good of a job as some would think.

2) So much of the angst and anger has gone on to this "search committee" and whether or not Barnes' relationship with Tom Turner (head of the search agency) had anything to do with the Stallings hire. Of course it did. But demanding that Barnes "come clean", what the hell, I expected Senator McCarthy to pop in and start screaming ARE YOU A COMMUNIST? Again, so over the top. That is how business is conducted for the most part. Relationships are developed, as are networks, and when it comes to these types of decisions, they are counted on. It ain't rare and it ain't rocket science.

3) I thought Barnes could have done a whole lot better job in answering some questions. For example, the one concerning Stallings capabilities where he said "he is above the noise" and that fans can either get on board or are off base, was horrible. Answering it in some form of 'we completely respect what Coach Dixon accomplished here, and Kevin will have big shoes to fill. We wouldn't have hired him if we felt he couldn't do the job. I am sure the fans will be quite happy with him once we start playing games." There. That is taking that question and answering it with a non antagonistic way. But in Barnes defense, I am sure he expected some heat, but what was scheduled as a PC/Pep Rally/Welcome to Pitt turned immediately into the McCarthy hearings.

4) One other thing, some of you were happy that the media were "tough". That is laughable. Because come sometime this fall, if Pat Narduzzi would lose to PSU or we start losing recruits and Ron Cook writes even a semi critical article, you will all want to tar and feather him.

5) And one more final thing on this whole Press Conference. I sure hope the same media, the same "COME CLEAN" or Rossi grilling happens with the Steelers or Pirates or Penguins, where most of the media members are cheerleaders and softball question after question to them. The media loves to flex its journalistic chops on Pitt sports, not so much on the pro teams. And I go one step further, where was the same anger and demanding to "COME CLEAN" when the Sandusky scandal broke at PSU. Most of the local media preferred to stay away from that completely. Amazing, the covering up a serial child rapist does not evoke the same vitriol that an AD using a search firm headed by his friend for this group of media.

6) I felt bad for Stallings, his family and Sheldon Jeter and family. The question had to be asked, but that put a lot of people in uncomfortable positions. To Stallings credit, while maybe not fully answering, he admitted what he did was wrong. Other than starting off rough (no doubt because the early attacks) he acquitted himself quite well, and you can see some of his personality.

7) I hate to say this, but if Kevin Stallings resembled more George Clooney (Jay Wright) than Kevin from the Office, would there be as much angst and disappointment? Beautiful people get the benefit of the doubt. Not so beautiful people don't get the same benefit of the doubt. That's human nature.

8) On Stallings. I too wanted Sean Miller. I too wanted "the next thing". But then we hired Stallings. And after a night to sit on this, I realized. Boeheim is 71. K is 69. Jim Larranage is 66. Roy is 65. Pitino is 63. Brey 59. Bennett a mere "pup" at 46. The ACC is NO COUNTRY FOR YOUNG MEN! Jay Wright is 54. Lon Kruger is 63. Tom Izzo is 61. Bob Huggins is 62. John Calipari is 57. Dana Altman is 57. Bill Self is 53. My point here, Stallings is far from over the hill. He is right at the age where the top coaches at top schools are. His hiring here is not that different than Kruger's at OU, Altman's at Oregon and Larranega at Miami. All met with shrugs and disappointment by the fan bases. All have done a great job. After realizing this and researching this, it made me feel better about the hire.

9) You can parse KenPom stats and such, but when talking about styles of play, Stallings expounded on letting players sometimes play, and not looking with one eye over the shoulder towards the bench if he made a mistake. Of which when that happened it was told to me at the PC, Sheldon Jeter nodded in agreement and approval. I am not saying this was a shot at Jamie, at least intentionally, I am saying this is something that could have come up when he met with the team before the PC.

10) Why can we accept how hard it is to recruit to Vanderbilt in football vs basketball? If anything, basketball is harder, just because the SEC is not the same in football rep wise. Let's give Stallings a chance to recruit.

11) And I will leave you all with this, when Ben Howland left, we all panicked. I think we also were concerned that this was not "the hot job" we thought it was, despite the new arena, the back to back Sweet 16's and essentially the entire roster returning. When we hired Jamie, people were pissed. Some people said it was the worst, the hiring process "a sham". Some fans, to the day Dixon left, held it against him, and waited to pounce on his every loss. On this board, it created a divide. The "JIGer" vs the "Jamie Haters", where people almost couldn't see gray, just black and white. When we would lose or Jamie miss on a recruit, the haters pounce, the JIGers defend. Always defend. Sometimes the defense was over the top. To the point of (my favorite) "well this isn't that important in life and you have no control so why do you get so upset". (let's remember this). And the critics were merciless even during games jumping all over Jamie, in games that Pitt actually ending up winning. He could never do enough for some.

I am concerned a similar and complete divide again, only flipped with the groups. To those JIGers who now want to bail, I would like to remind you all of your calm, sage advice of "entertainment", etc..and consider how you are acting. To those who thought Jamie could not do right, well I hope those failures of 22 wins and early exits in the NCAA aren't distant memories...meaning high points.

One final deep breath:

I don't care if some hack writers panned this hire. Some great BB coaches and ex players have lauded this hire. But for all Stallings so called attributes, his offensive mind, his coaching ability, his ability to identify talent, yeah....the question is, "why wasn't he more successful?" I don't know. We shall see. Stallings has less restraints here, but better competition. That being said, as the lady said in church "give coach a chance!"

I've asked those jerk-offs time and again at the PG about their lack of investigative reporting into Sandusky, especially when compared to Robert Ferrante at Pitt for example. The response is usually something like they have devoted "Acres" of coverage to Sandusky, ignoring the fact that none of it is investigative or mostly wire service recaps.

I'm with you. In some ways, if he wasn't caught screaming an expletive at his player in '15 and Jeter was from elsewhere and didn't play for Pitt, I doubt there's as much push back. Could his track record be better? Of course. Though, once he turned Vandy around - about the time Dixon took over for Howland ironically - did he have a nice run of sustained success and snag some decent seeds and advance to Sweet Sixteen a pair of times? Yes, he did. I think he'll do fine here. I don't expect the 28+ win seasons Dixon delivered awhile ago. But, once settled, I do expect 22 to 26 win seasons and a run or two in tournament.

Good post. Well thought out. I will say that I was in the camp of giving Jamie a chance when he got hired. I had heard how important he had been to Ben and how the players liked him. Fast forward 13 years later...I didn't want him to leave, either. But he did. Time to move on.

I didn't like the hiring of Stallings, but I am definitely willing to give him a chance. Again, time to move on. ANY coach that gets hired anywhere is a risk. You just never know if it will work out or not. Sometimes you get an "up and comer" and it fails. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you get a proven coach and it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes a new start works, sometimes it doesn't. Making comparisons about Jamie and Stallings, or Pitt and Vandy will do nothing.

Vandy and Pitt are not apple to apples comparisons, and I hope he has success. The only thing he will be judged on is wins. That's it! Winning the press conference or getting the approval of the fans/media of the hire will do nothing for a coach if he doesn't win.

Yeah, the more I've seen of him, the more he seems like a pretty good dude. He could have pull a "Barnes" during the press conference, but didn't. The only thing we can do is wait and see; who will be on his staff? Will he keep any of the recruits? What will his recruiting look like? Will he win?

When it comes down to it......what other choice do you have but to give the guy a chance? I mean I was a Pirate fan for 20 years when they completely sucked. You still remained a fan. It is what we do. Honestly, this hire does not bother me anymore, actually looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Like I posted and am harping on, the light came on when I started realizing the age and experience of the ACC coaches and pretty much every coach of the top ranked NCAA teams. Stallings (like Jamie) was in that sweet spot for age.

Everyone wants that young star, but honestly who are they? Most of the very best Mid Major Coaches now stay put. Or wait out until a mega offer comes.

Good post recruits but you still seem to be missing 1 key point. Dixon being hired was an unknown but he was here through the success of Howland. Plus he had never been a head coach before. The thing with Stallings is he only took Vanderbilt to the tournament 7 times out of 17 years. How does that inspire any excitement? He has never reached a final four in his whole long career. So we're supposed to believe that he will take us there? His reputation is kind of like Jamie's - underachieving teams.

So again good thoughts but the hire is very disappointing on a lot of levels.

Poker, maybe just Cal wasn't available. OH.....THANKS FOR REMINDING ME. I forgot a dribble (I mean a "DEEP BREATH")

Bonus: This week we have seen the Post Gazette come out with their Fab 5. The Trib, their Terrific 10. Aside from Soph Robbie Carmody, not one other player is receiving attention from P% or high major conferences. In fact, not even Duquesne level. It is a horrid BB area for what ever reason. Which is going to lead to another Deep Breath in days to come. And so this serious lack of local talent to rely on at least 1 player a year, may be holding this position back. After the Miller's and this is only because of the alumni or geographical connection, who did we think? Is Will Wade really better candidate than Kevin Stallings? I dunno.

I think we have a basis to predict how well Stallings will probably do at Pitt based on his long track record. Let's say he stays 5 years. 2 years we'll make the dance, probably win 1 game 1 year and a 1 and done the other - 2 NIT's and 1 year nothing. Is that taking Pitt to any kind of next level?

Someone like Wade, up and coming coach ready to reach the highest levels and someone like him would have been much better for Pitt, especially for what Barnes claimed he wanted.

Just look at the differences between the girls and the boys Fab 5 in the PG. The girls team had two seniors, one going to Pitt and one going to Penn, and three juniors, one who has committed to Duquesne (who is much better at womens basketball than mens), one whose favorites are Virginia Tech and Dayton, and one whose favorites are schools like Duquesne, Toledo and Akron. The boys team also has two seniors, one who isn't sure if he is going to play basketball in college but if he does will most likely have to go to a prep school or a juco, and one who is being recruited by D2 schools, and three juniors, one who has no interest in playing college basketball, one who is getting "some interest from mid-major division 1 school", and one whose current best offers are Bowling Green, Robert Morris, St. Francis and High Point.

I am hardly in mourning. Try again. I put up a whole post on Sunday night. Take a look.

Just didn't get home until very late last night. That is all!

I dunno.

You sound like such a fanboy now, don't you?

Why is Northwestern the school used to illustrate the problem he faced at Vandy with academic requirements? There is a school much closer to Vandy which has higher academic requirements. It is called Duke, and last time I checked it had a very successful BB program.

Oh I know Coach K has made it a powerhouse. He doesn't even recruit anymore; he selects. But Duke was a bad program when Coach K went there from Army. He made it what it is today. Shouldn't that be the measuring stick for Stallings? He certainly didn't turn Vandy into Duke or even Duke Lite.

Also, you acknowledge that the questions about the search firm, the disconnect between the type of coach Barnes said he would hire and the reality and the Jeter issue had to be asked. Then you blast the press for asking them in a way which put the program in a negative light. How exactly would you have asked those questions? I'm certain reporters everywhere would love to know.

If you can figure that out, you have a future in broadcasting. For example, you could ask Trump why a recent fact check by the NY Times showed that 74% of the facts he has claimed in statements made over the past 3 months are lies -- higher than any other candidate (although Cruz is close) --without him getting upset with you. Or you could ask him to show you the videos of Muslims dancing on rooftops in Jersey City on 9-11 celebrating the attack on the Twin Towers. After all, he said he knows it happened because he saw it on TV. (He didn't because there is no such footage.) You could ask the question in such a way that he doesn't threaten to sue you for libel, ruin your life after he becomes president, and speculate that you asked the question because your gf is on her period and you aren't getting any.

Mike....Duke has been successful.........FOREVER. And Duke winks at recruits academic records in basketball.

Secondly, you don't start a question in a press conference with "COME CLEAN". It is not a trial or an inquisition. What, should the journalist walk up and punch him in the mouth too, because he is angry and the fans are angry? This seems to be growing as we move from a Democracy towards an Idiocracy as we have seen with this presidential campaign.

Mike, I have to ask.....ARE YOU A COMMUNIST??? ARE YOU? COME CLEAN!
