Pitt Hits the Turf for Day 3 of Panther Challenge

PITTSBURGH – The Panther Challenge continued Wednesday morning at Charles L. Cost Baseball Field with a series of pushes, pulls and runs from the third base line to the right field wall. In total, the Pitt team covered 30,000 yards of turf during the 45-minute workout.

“Today’s workout as a whole was challenging but the team really came together to fight through adversity,” said junior guard Malik Ellison. “Everybody was really engaged and locked in to completing 30,000 reps in 45 minutes. We were all proud to reach that goal and we are going to keep building from here.”

Making the 30,000 yards more challenging to cover were the series of sleds, ropes and kettle bells that accompanied the workout. Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Garry Christopher broke down the workout into six continuous stations featuring four weighted sleds (225-pounds + the sled), a 50-foot rope pull with two 50-pound kettle bells attached and a kettle bell carry with two 40-pound weights. With six players on the turf at once with the various pushes and pulls, the remaining five players were in plank position until they could switch out. Midway through the workout the team swapped the ab work for sprints to the outfield wall and back.

“We have a new team with a lot of young guys and transfers so these workouts are great at keeping everyone together and building chemistry,” added Ellison. “We are learning together how to keep fighting and pushing. During the season, you are going to hit a rough patch or have to deal with adversity. Times like now are helping us prepare for that adversity. We are really just coming together as one team and one unit.”

PantherVision was alongside the team to collect all the sights and sounds from Wednesday's workout. Pitt continues the Panther Challenge Thursday morning at 6 a.m. Follow the team on Twitter and Instagram (@Pitt_MBB) for exclusive coverage.
