-Had the option to sit out and get paid but wanted to come back to Pitt. Well, thats 2 Coaches on staff that dont care about the money as first priority Duzz and Partidge. Nice job football staff.

-Crickets in the air that argued with me last summer that it was all about the money. Partridge just buried your theory in a live interview on why he chose to return to Pitt.

He's still collecting $200k additionally from FAU.

To the "it's all about money" point - making $200k after making $100k for the first time ccn change your lifestyle. But going from $200k to $300k or $400k everything stays about the same. Making $400k after $600k doesn't do much to your lifestyle do you might as well be happy in what you are doing.

While I do think he wanted to come back to Pitt, don't fool yourself. If these guys sit out a year or so, that sets them back big time for their next gig. Unless you are in your late 50s or 60s and don't care as much, these guys are going to take the next good job that is available to them vs sitting out and collecting guaranteed money. Its the better long term play.

Thanks for linking that.

He talks about only making about 20% of his FAU money now (losing 80%). Confirmed here.
He says he's losing 80% from FAU which is about $800,000 according to the article. Then he says with the Pitt money he will only lose 30-40% over the two years. That means Pitt is paying about $200k to $250k a year. Pretty good deal considering he made $350K at Arkansas in 2013.

He also talks about getting paid here for two years, so I think he wants to be at Pitt for awhile.

Of course he's going to lose money. We're not going to pay a DL coach what he was making to be a head coach, even if it is at a non-power 5 school. Sure he could have sat out for a year and collected checks but he wanted to coach because he loves it. Nothing about that is some indictment of Pitt.

He's probably getting closer to $300K. May even get a promotion to co DC before fall.

can someone break it out for me here. Is Steel saying that he lost 40% of his buyout by taking a job at PItt?

How much money would partridge have been paid if he doesn't come to pitt?

How much did he sign for with us?

Partridge contacted HCPN...

Read the article I linked above.

It says FAU owed him over $1million the next two years. In the interview @steel_curtain shared Partridge mentioned how he would have been reassigned within the athletic department and worked on "projects" from home.

The article I linked mentions how now that Partridge has another job FAU is only responsible for paying him about $200k over the next two years. Partridge confirms that in the interview by saying he lost about 80% of his FAU buyout.

So Partridge lost about $400k a year before you factor in what Pitt will be paying him.

Which tells you that Pitt is paying him around $400k per year.
Yep, from his own words about $350k in salary from Pitt each of the next two, plus the $200k from FAU means about $100k "lost". Of course, people who are smart know if he sat out of the game for 2 years, he would have been hard pressed to come back at close to this level of position and pay.

This isn't complicated. Partridge couldn't sit on the sidelines for two years and just bank checks. He's 43. He likely has a lifestyle based on his income like most.

As a coach with a reputation as a recruiter, you can't afford to sit out for two years you simply can't. As a man with a wife and two children you can't gamble with the next two decades of your life.

He's still collecting money from FAU, he's going to make a good amount from Pitt. If he performs well here he could be promoted or leave quickly for another job because he's a great recruiter.

Great recruiters don't stay great recruiters by not actively recruiting. He HAS to keep working because, see above.

Hyperbole aside, this is great for Pitt. He's a great addition. But it's all just business and right now this is a good business decision for both him and Pitt. I hope it pays great dividends. But let's not paint him as someone returning while not being about the money. 2036 is a long way off when your wife and kids are used to being in a certain tax bracket.

Ok, so fair to say in short term(next 2 years) he is probably losing money, app 100k, but in long term, it's better to be working than to be sitting unemployed.

Unless you have real F U money, the kind that can sustain not only you but your progeny, you can't sit out multiple years in this business.

It's a good situation for the guy. Come here where the defense has been not just bad but arguably the worst in the country, yet has some recruit upgrades and transfers about to come in and presumably improve. Even if it goes to mere mediocre status, it will seem like a miracle job. He'll get some juice from that toward other better jobs.

Partridge wants to move back up the coaching ladder again. Success as a DL will mean a DC spot then maybe looks as a HC again. He inherited a mess at FAU and was doing some things in the recruiting game they needed to do. Takes time to win through recruiting.

Short term loss to get back in the game and start that process again.

In most cases, the school on the hook has to pay the difference. So if FAU owed him 1M for 2 years and Pitt pays him $400K per year, then FAU owed the difference which is $200K.

Patridge chose to work for his money instead of sitting on the couch or on the golf course and collecting it.

Two years out of work would have also hurt his recruiting contacts with kids coming thru the high school ranks.

If anyone listened to the radio interview linked above, there is a Florida state law that funds coming from the state (I guess FAU is a state school) are not guaranteed, even if there is a contract if no longer working for the state related institution, so he would have had to continue to work for the school in some other capacity to get paid which would have been murder on his career.

Correct. It wasn't a real option.
