Here are MSU's passing defense numbers surrendered, plus defensive yds/gm surrendered, for Narduzzi's 8 years as the Spartans' DC plus the 2 years before he got there.

2005: 61%, 245 yds/gm, 2.3 vs. 0.7 TD/Int per gm, 165 rush yds/gm (2 years before PN)
2006: 58%, 231 yds/gm, 2.7 vs. 0.7 TD/Int per gm, 133 rush yds/gm (1 year before PN)
2007: 58%, 220 yds/gm, 1.7 vs. 0.9 TD/Int per gm, 127 rush yds/gm (1st year of PN)
2008: 53%, 213 yds/gm, 1.4 vs. 1.1 TD/Int per gm, 143 rush yds/gm (2nd year of PN)
2009: 61%, 268 yds/gm, 2.5 vs. 0.5 TD/Int per gm, 113 rush yds/gm (3rd year of PN)
2010: 58% 220 yds/gm, 1.5 vs. 1.3 TD/Int per gm, 134 rush yds/gm (4th year of PN)
2011: 54%, 177 yds/gm, 1.4 vs. 1.3 TD/Int per gm, 101 rush yds/gm (5th year of PN)
2012: 53%, 176 yds/gm, 0.8 vs. 1.1 TD/Int per gm, 99 rush yds/gm (6th year of PN)
2013: 48%, 166 yds/gm, 0.9 vs. 1.2 TD/Int per gm, 86 rush yds/gm (7th year of PN)
2014: 53%, 227 yds/gm, 1.3 vs. 1.4 TD/Int per gm, 89 rush yds/gm (8th year of PN)

Of note:
1) Completion %'s dropped significantly from PN's 5th year onward.
2) TD/Int rates improved immediately (except for his 3rd season) and improved to the point that in years 2/4/5 they were nearly even, and in years 6/7/8 MSU's D actually got more picks than TD's given up.
3) Rush yards against went down and stayed down.
4) Passing yards/gm dropped significantly from PN's 5th year onward except the last season when opponents were throwing the most at any point in his tenure (34 attempts/gm), but this is likely so high because of that insane bowl game against Baylor when the Bears got 603 passing yards but still lost due to MSU defensive adjustments in 4th quarter. Despite that, MSU still had more picks than TD's against, and the completion % remained near 50%.

Let's hope Pitt's current season is analogous to MSU's 3rd year under PN when their passing D was really bad, and things improve significantly next year and to a ridiculously better level in two years. This could very well happen considering we have 1 more year of Whitehead, and 3-4 more years of
--Damar Hamlin (4* CB - offers from OSU, ND, Mich, Clem, Aub...)
--Paris Ford (4* S - offer from Bama)
--Henry Miller (3* CB - 6'3 from FL)
--Therran Coleman (3* CB - 6'1 with long arms)
--Bricen Garner (3* S - 6'1 with great awareness/look back & ball skills)
--Maurice Ffrench (didn't he move to DB? - crazy fast)
--Albert Tucker (forgot about him, but 6'3, athletic from FL, very physical, always in right spot)
--Dane Jackson (RS FR already showing some flashes)
.....and hopefully
--Lamont Wade (5* CB - 5'9 but has shut everyone down at every elite camp)

Your point #4 has a pretty simple explanation. That's the "no fly zone" period when MSU was playing with 2 future NFL first round corners and Kurtis Drummond at FS amd RJ Williamson at SS. That was a badass secondary right there.

I wish we could get our hands on the coach who recruited a 2* safety (Trae Waynes), a 2* CB (Darqueze Dennard), a 3* WR (Williamson), and a 3* Athlete (Drummond) and turned them into the No Fly Zone and future NFL players.

Duzz is not used to the amount of passing in the ACC IMO. Clemson passed 70 times against us and Cuse 61. He will "figure" it out as he has more game ready players in the next year or two. Our DBs & DL were depleted and our LBs lack athleticism!

Those pass attempts were misleading. Basically inflated because it was us. Cuse backup qb threw for 350 yards against us. I don't think that is the norm.

Pitt has to teach the db's to be more physical for a group as a whole they don't scare you as hitting you and remembering it

Ha. We're off to a promising start. Duzzi's first class fits the mold of what he did at MSU-long, rangy, fast, physical athletes to play the corners.

The lack of physicality is hurting us more at the LOS than on tackling. Our guys aren't big and physical enough to jam the WRs at the LOS. Opposing WRs have been running free routes on us all year.
