Ewing didn’t even want the job. He made millions in the NBA and has no desire to recruit. Big John came to Patrick to be the next coach and saying no was difficult. I don’t see it lasting much longer.
College coaching is a grind. On top of that, you’ve got guys who were at the top of the NBA now going into living rooms and begging kids who couldn’t have held their jocks in their day. It sounds like such an easy fit to hire a big name alum but it’s so tough for these guys to adapt to college coaching.
Between GTown and Maryland, the opportunity is there to get back on track very quickly with the right hire.

Add Chris Mullin to the list. Penny Hardaway has accumulated a ton of talent, but has greatly underachieved as well.
Jury is still out on Juwan Howard as well.
And we won’t even mention Walter McCarthy.

I think all of those examples just go to show that coaching at a high level is really hard, and there aren’t many who can sustain it consistently. Everyone’s looking for the ones who can, and if you’ve got a guy who can do that (or can come close), you better fight like hell to keep him. That goes for basketball and football.

I find in most sports, rarely has the top players made the top coaches. Coach K, Rick Pitino, Mick Cronin, Scott Drew were never stars nor NBA players. Belichick, Saban, Tomlin, Arians, Reid, Meyer in football, in baseball, so many good managers were former catchers, but not a Johnny Bench or Mike Piazza type, and in the NHL, Mike Sullivan, Jon Cooper, Peter Laviollette certainly weren't stars.
I really don’t pay to much attention to college hoops like I used to but I was checking out some records last night. I couldn’t believe the GTown record. It’s really hard to believe. Seems like just yesterday 8 million kids in Californian were wearing Hoya Hats. They were as popular as New York Yankee hats.
