What is going on up there?
They lost their head coach,
a host of players left, and
this new coach seemingly
has them turned around
with what I thought were
some mediocre transfers.

Tonight they beat Minnesota
by 21. knocked off ranked
Mich St. a few nights ago.
They also beat IU recently,
and they're 6-9 in the Big 10
and 11-12 overall. What gives?

They still have more than half of their guys from last years team and play good defense. They are a middle of the road team similar to us.

Ok. Personally I thought
they were in for a disaster
of a year. These recent B 10
wins are upsets.

I’ll keep it very simple for you, Pat Chambers would have screwed up the following teams:
95 Bulls
71 Lakers
82 76ers
01 Lkees
08 Celtics
17 Warriors

Minnesota wasn’t really an upset - Minnesota stinks, and we should have beat them by 10+ like we beat UNC last night. We probably would have, too, if we had Horton.

I really just don’t think the Big Ten is very good - they built a huge cushion by winning games in the OOC, and now they’re just beating each other. But Chambers built a really solid roster, those kids are experienced (Harrar’s like 24) and talented.

Their best players stayed for some reason.

This is it. The returning players like Lundy, Sessoms, Harrar and Dread are good enough to keep them competitive and occasionally jump up and bite someone like they did to IU and Michigan State.

Do your self a favor a read their coaches resume. His mentors are Painter and Brad Stevens. Spent several years with Celtics, extremely well thought of. Has a nice recruiting class coming in as well. They lost players in the portal, but also picked some up. They beat Indiana earlier and have had several teams on the ropes. He is coach to keep your eye on in a tough league to win

They're the worst program in the B10 since joining, so what he's doing is credible.

uh, I don't understand the question. Normal response would be, "not sure why they suck so bad" but I'm guessing that is not where you were going with that.

He has a pretty decent, large class coming in - they lost a big one in Oweh, but got the Philly kid, Brown, who followed them from Purdue. It’s probably similar to our 2020 class. They’ll lose Harrar and a few other depth forwards, and they have a bunch of other kids who are seniors who could or could not come back for their covid year. Lundy is really their only player who doesn’t have senior or super-senior eligibility.

They have a bad arena, but Chambers did a lot of work to build up the back-end facilities, and they’ve actually ponied up on support staff. I believe they have one of the largest support staffs out there (5 support staffers plus two grad assistants, compared to our 4 staffers and zero grad assistants, though I think the grad assistant thing is a Capel problem), they pulled a guy from 247 sports to run their basketball recruiting, and they got someone to endow their head coaching position like Bickell did for football here. They’re actually spending like a power conference program now.

It’s still not a good basketball school, but I think they’re investing at a level where they can continue Chambers’ competitiveness in the Big Ten with how top heavy that conference is.

Good question. I should
have been more clear. I
was wondering how they
won those games. I thought
they really "sucked," and
should have been much
worse. Maybe they're
playing over their heads?

No problem. I can't stand
them either. I disliked their
last coach, Chambers. I
didn't know anything of
their new coach, but some
posters on here explainred
who he is, and described
what's going on at PSU.
I found it hard to believe
that what I considered a
Bball wasteland, is actually
turning the corner, while
we have sunk to where we
are now. I just feel that Pitt
has more Bball opportunity
than they ever will. Hope
I'm right about that.

Penn State has a good bit of talent. Chambers recruited very well there. I watched some of their game vs LSU this year and I didn't understand why a) all their players came back and b) why they were so talented. PSU would probably be a Top 4-5 team in the ACC.

They paid Shrewsberry 3.5 million to take over. Didn’t Pitt show some interest in him when we hired Capel ?
He has a pretty decent recruiting class coming next year. I saw them in person a couple times and they play
pretty tough like us. They have 3 or 4 decent players leftover.

Not saying you are wrong, but I would be shocked if Shrewsbury got 3.5. PSU is usually at the bottom of the conference in pay so I wouldn’t think they gave a first-year guy more than double what Chambers made.

Someone told me they are the oldest big ten team. If Shrewsbury is everything he is supposed to be he won't be there long

Believe what you want. I live in SC and I happen to know someone who was on the search committee that hired
him. This person, who is a faculty member was very upset they gave him that contract. You are right about what
they were paying Chambers, he was the lowest paid coach in the league.

Just got blasted by 25 at home by one of the worst teams in the P6, Nebraska.
