Penn State hires Shrewsbury

Seems ok.
It’s a huge risk to hire a guy who has never been a D1 head coach, but if you are going to go the assistant route I guess he’s a solid get with his previous experience in both college and NBA.

I guess that was my thought. Don’t see anything wrong with the hire but there had been talk that they would go after the Cleveland State head coach.

Yeah, you basically have two options if you’re a program like Penn State, and both involve rolling the dice. You either take a low/mid major head coach, and risk whether lower level success translates to major college basketball, or you hire a power conference assistant and risk whether the assistant coaching ability translates to head coaching ability.

But, if you’re going to take the “established, successful power conference assistant” route, Shrewsberry is about as good of an option as you could ask for. It’s a good hire.

Solid hire. A little surprised they did swing a bit higher than that though. That’s a really tough league, and unless he is a lights out recruiter (Underwood) or just a great coach (Pikiell), it’s gonna be hard to move up much if you are Penn St.

Not comparing programs (I’ve seen enough of that today lol) but Pitt has a much easier path in the ACC if they ever get their act together.

Iowa is gonna come back to earth soon, but Michigan, Michigan St, Ohio St, Purdue, Wisconsin and Illinois are gonna be really good for a while. And Indiana, and to a certain extent Maryland are always lurking.

He is part of the tree. The brad stevens tree, it is a big tree and growing bigger especially in big 10 territory. Gates has the bc connection so expect him there
