People Who Do Not Attend Games

Have we ever seen more than 40-45K at a Thursday game? We could have filled the lower bowl if we moved everyone down from the upper bowl. Student section was filled nicely, they have certainly been doing their part. The fans that were there were certainly into it...people werent sitting on their hands.

I've been going to Pitt games for 20 years now and I've rarely seen more than 40-45K outside of the big marquee games like ND and PSU. Even if we were top ten team, I don't think we see many more fans last night.

Not advocating the whole on campus stadium thing but the atmosphere would be a lot better in a stadium seating somewhere in the low 50K.

The last four years of Dixon was crap. A coach who was out to lunch and looking foolish on the sideline. Hard to be a Pitt fan with that nonsense. Narduzzi is in his second year. He can still do some really good things as the head coach. When coaches start to fail, that is when the after games pressers become an insult to the supporters.

If fans start to believe you can't coach, then any investment in time and money is not worth it unless the folks in charge acknowledge this is not working. Bylsma was found to be a moron. Why did it take five years? Dixon was out to lunch, contractually Smiley put Pitt in a bad position. Narduzzi may be coach who does really good things at Pitt. But when coaches become unaware they are the issue, then move on. Narduzzi will be given four years to elevate the program. But if I start to see the same nonsense answers of the two I named, then he is not the answer.

40K in a 45K seat stadium wouldn't look bad at all and the atmosphere would be great. Thing is, Pitt can make Heinz a 45K seat stadium if it chose to.

The upper deck endzone and upper deck Pitt sideline (non-TV side) should be closed. Open them for PSU, ND, and WVU.

Those of you that do not attend games, but find time to complain on this board are pathetic.
Yeah because its possible for everyone to attend a Thursday night game when you live 200+ miles away and have to work Friday. That's about as lame as these people who are so thinned skinned that call everyone with a gripe not a Pitt fan. Let's get this straight no one cares enough about Pitt football enough to come to a Pitt board and pose as a fan complaining. I never understand these people who don't agree with me calling me or anyone a troll or not a Pitt fan that's just lazy and an easy out because they can't have a debate with someone who has a different opinion. Maybe there are a few losers out there who actually do that but its not many Pitt football just isn't that important to more than about 40,000 people

Yes. One problem...if you sell out the lower bowl and people don't attend, what do you do then? There are plenty of fans, and a lot of non fans, who buy season tickets to attend one or two games a year.

Also, I thought it was rather pathetic how many people left at or around halftime last night. A few rows of my section cleared out and you could really see the difference in the crowd. It wasn't even that late of a game. I guess a lot of pansies were too cold?

You are always going to have no-shows but you can limit the amount if we right-sized the stadium.

1. By cutting supply from 70K to say, 45K, you can increase the price. You no longer have to worry about pricing those extra 25K tickets. Pitt has a pretty good diehard group of fans. You can raise prices and those Pitt fans will still buy them.

2. A lot of the empties are corporate tickets that come as part of a sponsorship packages. The problem is that since Pitt has so many has such a huge supply of tickets, they give these corporations large swaths of tickets. Is Huntington Bank going to buy less sponsorships if they get 10 tickets instead of 40? You see what I'm saying? Nobody uses these corporate tickets anyway. They are basically free throw-ins. Decreasing the stadium size opens some of those tickets up for Pitt fans to buy.

3. I would move the student section to the lower sideline behind the visitor's bench and increase the price charged. Make these "Oakland Zoo" type seats and get the students more involved. Instead of charging $25, charge $100 to ensure people that students that really want to be there will buy them. This also limits "premium ticket" supply allowing Pitt to charge more for lower sideline tickets.

Bottom line is that a right-sized stadium would help a lot. I was at the USA-Paraguay game at the Linc and they didnt sell tickets on the non-TV upper sideline. There were 50K people (20K empties) there and the place was about as electric as any sporting event I've attended.

I bought two season tickets for the psu game in the lower bowl. I've got them on stub hub and have sold them twice. They didn't sell last night.

I couldn't go to GT and sold my lowers for $50 each. I went last night but had 2 extras and sold them for $30 each. It depends on the section and what you are selling for. I looked at other prices, what people were selling for, chose a great price point and they sold within hours.

If you had Super Bowl tickets, and didn't price them right, they wouldn't sell either.

FWIW, trying to make a a quick buck, I bought PSU/Nebraska tickets off Ticketmaster (because there were thousands available) after Paterno announced his retirement. That was supposed to be his last home game. I thought I could make a ton. I sold them BEFORE he was fired and got less than face. Lost money on the deal.

Why even respond Vol to his nonsense thread? I guess people living in Cali or Texas or Arizona are all horrible fans because we aren't going to games lol. What a ridiculous thread this is, started by a clueless yinzer so it's not surprising. This Piranha guy would want us to be positive no matter how many bad losses Pitt has lol. Give me a break, they will lucky to get 6 wins.

It's a long term solution that doesn't get solved until we have a new stadium on campus AND consistent support from the administration. It isn't going to happen at Heinz Field, despite what some choose to believe.

Thursday night games are tough for out of town fans - period. It cost them a day and a half of work or a very late return home on Thursday night. It is a nice opportunity for people to stick around the city and enjoy Pittsburgh and visit campus, etc. but not everyone wants that so you really are left with the Pitt regional fans as your base support.

Pittsburgh locals just don't support the team in droves. The Pitt fanbase is not even at the level of the Penguins who incidentally had a packed house at PPG Arena last night. It is shame for the University and the team, but it is what it is and has been for as long as they have been at Heinz.

Those are my seats, lol. I am considering moving anyways, they are too low down to see a lot of the action.

I agree - it is ridiculous.

Piranha is 1 of the kool-aid drinkers who acts like a board mod. Don't dare criticize the program no matter what because if so you are a bad fan.
Pitt has a pathetic fan base. Bottom line. I am not sure how any rational person could expect this program to start landing 4 and 5 star recruits with this support.

If it takes interrupting your real life on a daily basis to get to every game for them to get those recruits, then fck it. I'll stick with going to one or two games a year and getting drunk at those tailgates for an 8-5 team.

Wow dude you are utterly clueless. What the hell would you like us to do after another embarrassing performance by the defense and Narduzzi acting like a maniac and refusing to make adjustments??

I swear you and a few others need to wake the heck up.

Pitt draws the same type of crowds as Baylor, TCU, and Stanford. The stadium kist makes it look worse. 40K for Pitt is a good crowd. We are a small (by P5 standards) school in possibly the most rabid pro sports city in America.

And I will tell you this, when I lived in Pittsburgh, I went to every Pitt game. And if I still lived in Pittsburgh, I would likely still go to every game. For awhile, about 5 years, I had Steelers season tickets while living in Baltimore, I never went to more than 5 games in any of those years, usually went to less, 3-4. To be honest, I love going to football games, but not enough to dedicate 8-10 hours of driving every weekend to do so. Now, I go to 1-2 Steelers games and 1-2 Pitt games every year, and I am perfectly content. and when I go, I get to the tailgate 3 hours before kickoff and stay to the end and have a great time. That's better than being somehow "obligated" to get there every time at all costs.

Plus who is driving more than an hour to watch that crap mediocre product. I mean I will drive the 3.5 hours no problem but not for a horrible product. I have tickets to Duke and Syracuse but we will likely be 5-5 at that point so is that worth my time not really when I can get frustrated right here on the couch and not spend 500 bucks driving and spending the night, eating out. If we are contending and those games mean something sure it would be worth my time but just to watch them fight to make another crap bowl no thanks

Agree

Why does Poker complain if Narduzzi acted " like a maniac"????

We just had a coach with no pulse and posters were actually pushing for Pelini at one point????

Just bizarre....

Agree, for god sakes Pitt needs to throw in the towel already on this. Bite the bullet and do it. How much damn data do they need?

I don't think that the Rooney's want to deal with tarping off sections of Heinz and then having those tarps removed after each Pitt game. They can't even be bothered to remove the white background from Pitt's logo at midfield because it's easier to just fill it in an paint the Steelers logo over it.

Tarping is stupid anyways, who are you trying to impress by having the same 45000 people crowded close together. I sat in the upper deck for the 1st half vs. GT in supreme comfort because it was sparse up there, then was able to move down to the lower deck because there where empty seats in the 3rd quarter, it's nice having the upper hand over the team and being comfortable and able to move around.

If your definition of a successful football game from a fan's perspective is having room to sit, then Pitt is among the best.

If you force another team's fan base to buy season tix to get the one they want, you are gonna have this. Simple.

I'm not an on campus proponent, but I think everything needs to be on the table looking long-term. Heinz is just too big for us. I'd rather us "right-size" somehow, be it tarps or a smaller stadium, then have the problems we have now. If we had a smaller number of seats we wouldn't have the scattershot crowds we have now. For comparison, the crowd we had last night that looked so sparse would have packed Baylor's new stadium and almost packed the Carrier Dome. The atmosphere would have been completely different and no one would be complaining today.

As for the games where we could pull more fans and go above 45-50K....screw it. Most of the extra fans are opposing fans anyways. At the very least, close off an upper deck and the endzone deck. I'd imagine we'd easily fill the lower bowl with Pitt season ticket holders.

BINGO! The Pitt brass are starting to realize this too...

I live 4.5 hours away, use to drive up to every home game, but last 4 years, this is where I am at as well. I went last night , I was in town already, or I wouldn't have made that long drive for a very mediocre product.

Pitt fans suck the life out of the team and program overall. We are playing the #25 team in the country at home, it is a 3 point game, and when the team needs the fans the most they are not there. It is something the team recognizes as well as recruits.

Honestly, it really does not do any good to complain about Attendance.

The people on this board are either the ones that were at the game, or the ones that live far away and didn't make the trip (which you can not blame them)

If you want to make a difference, then go out and round up some people and bring them to the game.

Me and my group were there last night and enjoyed the game (not the result). We stayed the entire time. A lot of people came to the game later that kickoff. While wasn't full by any means, I didn't think it was that bad of a crowd. The student section was a little disappointing, but the ones that were there were fired up.

These types of posts really do get old.

Win and they will come , isn't that what pro Ketchup field keep saying ? Well let's win consistently and see if that is true

Right, between lousy game day atmosphere and the negative, self-loathing fan base (on full display here today) it's a miracle we can land any top recruit or keep any coach beyond 3-4 years. Fans need to show up, support the team, and stop being so damned negative.
