People Who Do Not Attend Games

Right, between lousy game day atmosphere and the negative, self-loathing fan base (on full display here today) it's a miracle we can land any top recruit or keep any coach beyond 3-4 years. Fans need to show up, support the team, and stop being so damned negative.

Fans fault reason 1,459. Lmao

Honestly, it really does not do any good to complain about Attendance.

The people on this board are either the ones that were at the game, or the ones that live far away and didn't make the trip (which you can not blame them)

If you want to make a difference, then go out and round up some people and bring them to the game.

Me and my group were there last night and enjoyed the game (not the result). We stayed the entire time. A lot of people came to the game later that kickoff. While wasn't full by any means, I didn't think it was that bad of a crowd. The student section was a little disappointing, but the ones that were there were fired up.

These types of posts really do get old.

I actually thought the student section was the only section that wasn't disappointing. The rest of the lower bowl was probably 2/3 full and only 1/2 full after halftime. Very sub-par for a 5-2 team facing a ranked opponent on national TV.

Why does Poker complain if Narduzzi acted " like a maniac"????

We just had a coach with no pulse and posters were actually pushing for Pelini at one point????

Just bizarre....

And isn't it a bit humorous and IRONIC that he'd be complaining about another human being acting like a "maniac"? Narduzzi has millions of dollars at stake, PP only has to worry about awaking his Mom from the basement with his ranting and raving; unfortunately, it's not soundproofed.

No one has an obligation to buy tickets, attend games, contribute,etc.. But please, please, if you choose to not attend or legitimately are unable to attend a game, STOP the whining about those who do attend.

fan support plays a role in the atmosphere of the game, can energize the home team a little bit (maybe, plenty of teams play in front of sellout crowds and get the living crap beat out of them repeatedly, in front of them). Pitt's corners just can't cover anyone, you can play in front of 1 million fans or just 10 fans and it would still be the same deal.

What happened to all those season tickets we sold? The ones Barnes and Narduzzi were gloating about all offseason.

Some of them -- I don't have a number, but its more than a couple -- were sold to PSU fans so they could attend that game. Pitt got the money for them, but had to know a good percentage of those seats would remain empty the rest of the season.
You can't blame people for not attending every game. I attended multiple Pitt and PSU games for many years, but I rarely go now. My kids have graduated. I'm getting older. The trips are more expensive. Nearly all the games are on TV. I can enjoy them from the comfort of my living room rather than sit in the rain or cold. And, on a nice fall Saturday afternoon, I can go play golf while I record the game and can watch it later. It is just not worth the 6 hour round trip for me to go to either stadium. There are a lot of folks just like me out there.

maybe that's the problem. Cornerbacks are nervous playing in front of 40,000 people...

A loud raucous crowd can cause false starts, and can throw the timing off.

And therein lies the rub. Barnes hyped the hell out of this season (that's a big part of his job). It's not turning out to meet the hype. So I'd expect to see renewals fall next season. People will no doubt feel suckered. We were so close to meeting the hype, but alas....no..

Are people just stupid? If they haven't learned by now they never will.

Therein lies the rub Pitt fans are S A W F T....saaaaaaaaawft!

Pederson and Nordy ran many off, regardless what you believe , and going to take some success, sustainable, to get people back.

These threads are amazing. Like many die hards. I was there Thursday night.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM. Its not the 30000 die hards who go to the games. Its the casual Pitt fan that needs to come to games. You know how that happens?

I do! Pitt needs to stop constantly shitting the bed when the stage is set for the program to take a step foward. Until then.

Stop blaming the fans. Blame Pitt for always losing a game where they have a chance to get the casual fan interested.

Those of you that do not attend games, but find time to complain on this board are pathetic.

Well...I have a family and they will always take precedence over a game.

I still go to the majority of games but I don't let Pitt (or anonymous tough guy posters) dictate what is important to me.

You don't think fan support plays a role?
What comes first, the support or the success?

If they'd have a 11-2 season just once, then came out 3-0 the next September and be ranked top 10-15, wouldn't enthusiasm be sky high? How easy is it to maintain enthusiasm when you go 6-6 almost every year and then 8-5 seems like winning the Super Bowl.

If it takes interrupting your real life on a daily basis to get to every game for them to get those recruits, then fck it. I'll stick with going to one or two games a year and getting drunk at those tailgates for an 8-5 team.

knew the father of the year would chime in on this one.

LOL - does it alarm anyone else that this guy is allowed near teenage girls? I have to think that the soccer stories are just a part of his stihck. Do you think he actually believes his own lies about being some kind of successful high-roller? It's clear as day that he's got the IQ of a peanut. Probably just a part of the PP/TD/Phil insane clown possey, right?

Who me? I'm not a high roller, I do have $150K/year salary working in IT 9-5. My daughter is in 10th grade and plays high school and club soccer-and me and a lot of the fathers of the other kids on the team typically go to every game, I mean what have I said that is not believable, seems like a pretty common, average life to me? I mean, my salary is not outrageous for an IT Manager job and maybe you don't have kids and can't imagine missing a Pitt game for girls soccer, but someday you might. What SCHTick? Why would I make up boring stories like this?

yeah, he's a classic helicopter parent. Probably his daughters best friend rather than a true parent. Usually those kids end up failing miserably.

I'm a helicopter parent for wanting to see her games, wow, then pretty much the entire team will fail miserably in life because all their parents seem to be at every game too.

Get back to work by the way, text your kids a photo so they can remember what you look like,

We have the most asinine fan base. Any Pitt fan that is left, after 30 years, should be commended not attacked by you dolts

The Pitt fan base is small, but hardly pathetic. I go to every home game and thoroughly enjoy the experience. Course I'm happy when we win and disappointed when we lose, but I like that fact that I'm there and trying to help my favorite team.

My section makes noise. Actually not my section, just about 10 of us maybe. If the whole stadium made noise like we make noise, the opponent would have problems. I was hoarse after the VT game.

I think that the posters are correct who say that if we win, the crowds will increase. I think we have 40K there who are the hardcore Pitt fans, and if we win we'd get 50K there with the casual, band-wagon Pitt fans added in.

One thing I like about going to the games is bantering and high-fiving with the fans around us. We have the whole range of Pitt fans, but fortunately we have a couple who always help to keep things light and in perspective - regardless of how our DBs are playing!

Sometimes I wonder if some people have forgotten how much fun it is to go to a Pitt football game. Though I would like to see steps taken to shorten the games - getting way too long.

Course the main all-time problem with the perception of Pitt attendance is magnified a thousand times by the ridiculous BIG-BIRD YELLOW seats...

Go Pitt.

...let's face it...people are willing to fill Heinz for the Steeler games but not for college games...
... not everyone can afford season tickets for both teams and the pro teams who come in have more attraction than the college teams...
...the "new" opponents from the ACC do not raise the interest that used to be present with playing Notre Dame, West Virginia and Penn State each year...
...and a 50,000 seat Pitt stadium in Schenley Park might even attract more students...

Yes we do - fans who feel entitled to have Pitt land elite recruits and win lots of games when they destroy any momentum we have when they do not support the program and then bash the coach and team. Players win games, and players want supportive fans.

One poster mentioned Heinz field was 2/3 full? It wasn't! And the attendance wasn't 40k it was more like 30k.
But it was embrassing!
We're out of towners ( 300 miles out) and were there like every game enjoying the high winds from the empty upper deck!
All of you who say a winning team will bring out the fans don't have a clue because that's not the problem. The problem is the complacent Pittsburgh fans which isn't likely to change with the current athletic department strategy.
On our 5 hr ride home on Friday we listened to the fan 93.7fm until we lost reception after the first tunnel. I never agree with them but I do now! Their conclusion was and is that an on campus stadium of 50k is necessary for fan support BUT That Ship has Sailed and its never going to happen.

So tarp Heinz field for PITT games to a 40k capacity and be done with it!
That's probably all PITT can expect when you have fans that make up every excuse in the book to not attend a game including sitting home to watch October hockey.
All of you who stayed home are part of the problem not the solution.
Tarp the field to 40k capacity
Lower capacity/attendance % figures will be higher
The place will look better on TV and to recruits on the sideline at games
It will be noisier with fans concentrated in the lower bowl

People who aren't planning to attend shouldn't buy tickets since that sets up an unreasonable expectation of fans expected at a game. PITT athletics needs to understand the true extent of the attendane issue! If you want to attend one game buy a ticket on stub hub or some other outlet.
PTT can use those tickets to flood youth football programs with comp tickets to get kids and familes to the games with the goal of those kids becoming loyal fans 10 years down the road.

My wife and I will see the 30k fans who are actually interested in PITT football on 11/19.IMO the PITT football fanbase who attends games is 30k not 40k as often reported!

Great Post! Tarp the upper deck opposite the camera. I would move Pitt to the other side and make that the home side. You have the Hall of Fame on that side and other sites to see, and it is easier to get into the stadium over there as well.

keep pitt on the shade side..whatever the shade side is, should be pitt's home side..

Pitt plays 7 home games. You need the shade for 2 games max. This is Pittsburgh. It is usually cloudy and heat is not going to be a factor for the majority of our home games. If anything, the sun will keep people warmer on the days it is in the 40's to 60's.

oh man, I disagree with this wholeheatedly.. been in the sun a few games this year and last, freakin killer.. Youngstown state game last year, I am pretty sure I was actually cooking to death..

This is Pittsburgh, does it really get that cold in October and November to the point where you need the sun to warm you up? With our propensity for noon home games, the shade is an asset moreso than a detriment IMO..
