For yinz younger folks, if you see this 30 for 30 you should watch it. I think it is when college basketball was at its best because guys stayed mostly at least through their Junior years, some Sophs (like Magic Johnson) entered the draft but they were rarities.

Anyways....the sheer athleticism of that team, I can remember the anticipation and then the actual Louisville/Houston game in the Final 4 of that year!! It was just an amazing dunk contest. As a young kid, I rooted for these types of teams and was pissed when NC State won.

I liked the uber athletic teams. Man college basketball was so stacked then.

They were fun to watch. I was pretty young, but remember them and Guy Lewis. I liked Nolan Richardson and Arkansas, Tark and the Runnin Rebels and the Fab Five. They were all exciting teams to watch.

I lived in Houston during those years and had a chance to see the Cougars up close and personal quite a few times. I tell anybody that will listen that despite the hype of all those high flyers, the most talented player on that team was Bennie Anders, Instant Offense............it’s a shame he couldn’t keep the main thing the main thing

I lived in Houston too. Benny Anders was very talented, but saying he was better than Clyde the Glyde or Akeem is wrong. Saw Olajuwan as a raw freshman. All he could do was dunk or block shots then, but man how he did that all so well. Can't believe Guy let Clyde in with 3 fouls in the first half.

Right, two future hall of famers not as good as Anders.......?

"The Dream". Best footwork, positioning, drop step and up and under in bball history.

Awesome player, but up and under goes to Kevin Mchale

Two best post players ever, both tried to tutor Dwight Howard, both failed.

Hard to say what's the best Houston team...Elvin Hayes, Don Chaney, game of the century team. Or the 83 team referenced above.

I agree. Anders was extremely physically gifted. But come on, Drexler and Olaujowan are all time greats, and Michael Young was pretty damn special himself. The cool thing and I don't know what it was, when they went to look for Benny Anders because he fell off the radar, and they were worried about him or drugs, but he is living in Detroit, a fairly normal life.

Was my favorite non Pitt team ever. I still have nightmares about Derek Wittenberg and Lorenzo Charles.

You know I went into that game a huge Cougars fan - but NC State won me over - and I blew up off the couch when that dunk went down!

Sorry to rub it in - had to get it out of my system.

Benny Anders was mad talented but the most talented players in Houston Cougar history were "The Big E" Elvin Hayes, (H)Akeem "The Dream" Olajuwon and Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, and based on his NBA success I'm going with my all time favorite player, The Dream, as the all time greatest member of Phi Slamma Jamma - H2P!

My favorite 30 for 30 is the one on the NCState team that beat Phi Slamma Jamma. I’ve watched that quite a few times.

I was a Louisville fan then. It started in 1980 with Darrell Griffith. I just loved that they played above the rim. I can't stand them now. That said, that final 4 game with Houston was one of the best games I ever watched even to this day. Houston eventually pulled away and won 94-81 I believe. Those two teams were athletically freakish, and they all played above the rim, even the guards on those teams were long and athletic and played above the rim.

I think that was the golden age of college hoops tho. Like you said, most players stayed in school four years. That era included, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Eweing, Sampson and several other all-time greats. We will never see that again. The most talented kids maybe play a year and say goodbye to college ball. Sad!

And I know the things about kids getting paid and all that so I hope yinz spare me the morality, but guys like Bird, Magic, Ewing, Jordan, Worthy, Sampson, Olaujowan, Shaq, David Robinson, etc.....were able to build a brand and a national following with their playing of multiple years in college.

Loved the McCray brothers Scooter, and Rodney out of New York. Also one of my favorite Louisville players ever was Lancaster Gordon and later Milt Wagner. They were two really athletic guards.

Not sure what was a worse home town draft move. The Steelers not taking Dan Marino or the Rockets selecting Rodney McCray over Drexler.

How about that 82 final four? Georgetown with Ewing, UNC with Jordan, & Worthy. Houston with Drexler & Olajuwan. The funny thing is that Rob Williams was supposedly the big star of that team, and he totally choked against UNC.
