Thinking about driving from Cranberry and switching to a train somewhere in Eastern PA or NJ. Last year I parked my car at Newark airport to board a train, but I'm thinking I'd rather board one perhaps 50 miles further out. Thinking this might be less stressful. Any recommendations?

You can take a train from Harrisburg. That probably would be less stressful than dealing with Newark. If you want to drive closer to NY, you can also take a train from New Brunswick, NJ (Rutgers area), which should be less crowded than the Newark Airport.

NJ Transit runs trains from Peapack and Gladstone, about 35 miles outside of NYC, that run directly to Penn Station in Manhattan. Probably about 60-80 minute trip in, depending on time of day. Plenty of parking out there. I'd download the NJ Transit route map and check it out.

You can drive to Trenton, park and take the train into Manhattan and take the subway to the Bronx.

I posted earlier as did another. Drive to Middletown, PA which is HBG East exit(mile post 247). About a 3:20 trip for 190 miles. Go to AMTRAK train platform 10 minutes from pike. Park free. Take the Keystoner or Pennsylvanian, as low as $44.00 round trip, most are $59. Takes 3:20 to Penn Station. Internet service on train. Have done it many times and can't beat it.

I take my family to New York two or three weekends every year. We usually stay in the Times Square area for one of the weekends. I highly recommend you do this but it can be quite pricey over the holidays. On the other weekends we usually stay at the Embassy Suites in Secaucus. Free parking, free breakfast, nice pool, and an 11 minute bus ride to the Port Authority at 41st and 8th. The bus is about $2.50 each way and the bus pickup area is about 50 yards from the front door of the Embassy.

If this doesn't work, I sometimes drive to the Hamilton New Jersey train station. It's just north of Trenton, but unlike Trenton is safe, easy to find, and has ample free parking. The slower train, New Jersey Transit, takes a little longer than Amtrak but costs about $12.00 per person and seniors/children are under $6.00 each way.

In all of the above cases you'll be in Mid-Town. Find a subway and get yourself to the Bronx. It's pretty far away and you'll want to look for the express trains in order to bypass some of the Harlem stops.

I've been going into the city since I was a youngster in the 70's and I know my way around. Ask any questions and I'll try to answer.

Since you'll be in the Bronx, I'll let you in on a secret. The Bronx has a Little Italy that hasn't been taken over by tourists like the one in Lower Manhattan. It's across the street from Fordham. A long walk to/from Yankee Stadium but a short cab ride. It's the best Italian food in New York and it isn't close. Here's a link: http://www.arthuravenuebronx.com/

I myself have stayed at the Meadowlands Sheraton and catch a hotel shuttle to Secaucus Junction (about $5.00) then caught a train (short ride) into Manhattan and then up to Yankee stadium. Take I-80 to Route 3 and look for the Meadownlands exit. I like to be efficient when I travel.

I'm staying at the brand new Even Hotel in Midtown East, right near Grand Central.

a little pricey ($280 a night), but very nice. Right near Grand Central, so it is a quick 20 minute subway ride on the 4 train to Yankee Stadium.

Hotels in the Times Square area are $400-$600 this weekend. Not sure about mid-week, but it's still the holidays. First-rate joints are ridiculous. My wife & her best friend will be there, I booked a place 2 months ago......$423 with taxes. You can stay at LaGuardia or Long Island for half that. NYC has lots of options.
