Pirate Sunday outfits...

I REALLY liked the mustard and white Sunday unis they have worn for the past several years. However, I'm sure I can get used to these too.

Still, I think these look more like costumes than they do uniforms. They look like softball uniforms.

My era..... Love it. Poly doesn't breathe so they were hot as hell today.

Polyester has come a long way since 1979. They make them soft and breathable now. I look at my kids' baseball uniforms now and can't believe that I had to wear the hot, scratchy, & heavy crap back in the day.

unis looked real nice.. Gonna be our sunday usual, I fully expect us to go undefeated on the day that our Lord rested..

that's a great lineup.. Heard they are gonna "open" the roof for the beach boys in May, weather permitting. Marshall Tucker Band, a little "heard it in a love song" while sitting in the house that Mario built, even though he has yet to analogically build it yet, well I love it. BTW, I am feeling that I used "analogically" incorrect here..

I don't know, kind of sad to see the old alternates go. The mustard yellow caps and armbands were a great look.

wow, I loved those uniforms.. gonna have to agree to disagree on this one..

I always liked the pinstripe option to the unis they had back in those days.

Did the OP really call it an outfit?
What do you like better, the yellow tops or the black bottoms?

Yeah I did. I was being a bit ironic...I do admit I looked at the title and thought "gee, that sounds pretty gay". Not in the homophobic slur sort of way, but the goofy sort of way.

One things that is different now, same thing with the Pens going back to their original Black and Yellow (gold) sweaters, is the shades of yellow/gold now seem to be a bit more intense. But what makes both even more intense is the difference between 1979 technology and now, the High Def TV's and digital photography really make these things "pop" whereas back in those days, the lack of definition muted the colors a bit.

I feel like most of the reason for them picking the yellow uniforms was to bring back the pillbox hats in earnest. That should lead to some solid merchandising, I always felt like those hats were pretty popular even when they weren't readily available or particularly relevant to the younger fans.

as much as I love the sunday unis we had on, and I mean it. Those "pillbox" hats, or whatever they call them, those are brutal. Not surprised they didn't catch on. Even 1986 barry bonds cant make it look cool, and he could make anything look cool..

Have to admit, I was really surprised when the UniWatch type articles came out and were kind of excited about the pillbox hats (and potentially the Stargell Stars) coming back. Then I saw that they're the top selling item on the Pirates' shop on MLB.com. Really took me by surprise as I was sort of in the same camp you were. Thought people wore them for nostalgia, not because they really thought they were stylish.

From seeing them in action on Sunday, it does look like these hats have a lower profile than the ones in the past. Don't stick up quite so much.

I hated the chalk stripe. Switch to all white in 1980 was welcome. Preferred the colored tops with white pants. None of these look good with today's baggy cuts and PJ pants. Some things don't translate well over time.

Yes lower profile and they look cheesy as a result.

Oh man, when I was a kid I dug the pinstriped shirts with the black pants.

The Pirates introduced this mix-and-match set in 1977. The pillbox cap from the National League Centennial season was retained, as was the common tricolor sleeve striping of the doubleknit era, but the mustard gold of 1970-76 was replaced by bright gold.

The Pirates had two pillboxs caps -- black was more commonly worn than the gold. Usually the gold lids were paired with the black jerseys, but I believe every conceivable permutation was tried in a game at least once. The Pirates seldom wore the all-blacks on TV games because fans with black-and-white TV sets complained that they couldn't make out the players.

A Japanese manufacturer supplied the white and gold unis while a US maker -- Rawlings? -- rendered the gold ones. Note the difference in the letters and numbers in old photos. The Bucs got the font right on the throwbacks. They are near-perfect recreations.

Names appeared on the jerseys in 1979. By 1980 the chalk stripe whites gave way to a plain white home version. The colored tops and bottoms eventually became road unis only. If memory serves, the Bucs scrapped the look for home whites and road grays in 1985, although the black pillbox caps lasted until the spring of 1987.

Back in the late 70s teams played a glorious shitload of true scheduled doubleheaders. If you attended a twinbill you'd see the Buccos in two different get-ups. maybe gold-over-black and then black over white. I remember San Diego coming in with their brown jerseys and white pants with the Pirates in black tops and white pants.

And then there was the team's official jacket.......
