I'd take the Volleyball coach at this point over Crapel.
There are a lot of coaches that would do better than Capel at Pitt.
If he would take the job, which I’m skeptical of, he’d have the team in the tournament next year.
1 season. He would get top-level transfers and make the NCAAT next season.

I have said a million times, you fire Capel (or any coach) if you can upgrade. Of course if you can get Pitino or another guarantee, you fire him. I wouldn't pay Capel's buyout to lose Hugley and hire a lottery ticket who has to rebuild again.
Irrelevant. Wins and losses are all that matters. He could run a prostitution ring for all I care if he makes the NCAAT

It is very easy for any of us to sit here on the sidelines and say that we would do anything to win games. It is something completely different for the people whose careers and reputations are on the line.
A mid-major coach may actually be worse. Capel was that hot young coach once. Look at SHU. Struck out on Louis Orr and Bobby Gonzalez before hitting the lottery with Kevin Willard. Rutgers struck out on Kevin Bannon and Mike Rice before hitting on Steve Pikiell.
Orr and Gonzalez were clearly better than Capel. Bannon made an NIT. Capel is headed for his 6th straight losing season.

Coaching hires fail… duh. If it was easy nobody would ever have to fire their coach.
But you don’t keep an absolutely terrible coach just because the next one might not be good.

You do keep a terrible coach another year if the buyout is huge and he has one of the best players in college basketball plus some old guards returning.
Hugley is good but he is not one of the best college basketball players. And having him here next year saves like $2-3 million… that is not worth it.

He has only played 30 minutes in 9 of 16 games.
That hardly equals what you suggest.

Hugley is a 100% gone if there's a coaching change and may be gone anyway even if Capel stays.
Hugley is going to be a star. Maybe the best Big in college basketball next season. Return the guards and do work in free agency and it could be an NCAAT team.

I’ve been vocal in how much I like Hugley but to suggest he’s one of the best in college hoops is beyond silly.
