How far Clarion has fallen. No offense intended towards Pitt, but Clarion, at one time, was a wrestling powerhouse.

Also, can someone explain to me why Pitt can't , or doesn't, recruit the WPIAL and western Pa. with all the talent so nearby?

Re: recruiting ....see below.

After Peters first recruiting class I was thinking things were changing, but it seems for two years now we've made no headway whatsoever against PSU. WVU has good classes and VA tech may have pulled ahead. How can a team that won the last three Eastern Wrestling League championships (I know not a great league) and the ACC (I Know also not a great league) have the worst recruiting class??? It seems we only recruit brothers of prior wrestlers. We just got another Wilps, Zanetta. Unless there's another Thomasseit out there I don't know about 184 looks a little sparse next season. I'll tell you what though, if Peters has three consecutive bad classes, I'd put a stop to this pretty quick and go outside the local area for a really good coach that's got high energy. Throw a little ACC money to the wrestlers. I know Pitt put some money into the program recently, but compared to Ped St., hell and probably Edinboro are facilities are pretty low on the totem pole.

2016 recruiting looks like it is off to a good start, but 174 and 184 need help for next year. Maybe there is a transfer coming.

Re: recruiting ....see below.

my guess is to look for bonaccorsi or solomon to go on a diet next year and one of them will be at 84 and the other to 97. then rizzo would have to step up at heavyweight. 74 will be a hole unless wiercioch regains his high school form and bumps up a class. bright is a big kid so i could see him jumping two weight classes to 57 if racciato stays at 49. this team could be taking a major step back next year unless something clicks for a few of these guys...

It is definitely not that they don't recruit the WPIAL. Class of 2014 is loaded with WPIAL kids (Gromacki, Wilps, Forys, Bruce, Price). Half of their 2015 class is from the WPIAL. The entire (current) 2 man class for 2016 is from the WPIAL. The quality seems to be the point of contention for most here.

It's seems pretty clear to me that they put significant money into the Class of 2013 and they are going to sink/swim with them. Pitt fans aren't used to having a slew of highly regarded kids come in at once, so maybe adjustment is needed. 6 starters came from that class. Convincing multiple starter quality studs per class to sign with your school given a situation like that is something a select few schools can do successfully. Our track record is not there (yet). We just started winning conference titles (for the first time in generations) this decade, after all.

I get the desire to land more area top kids, approaching a rate like Lehigh does in the Eastern part of the state. I even get the frustration over not being a top 10 team in a region this fertile. I just hesitate to cede that it's an effort thing when they've proven they can do it - interest is as an important a variable, too. West Virginia & Arizona State just got new coaches, they're having the splash we got our when our HC spot transitioned. This is not a surprise.

I'd think Morelli will be taking 74 - he was jacked at 165. I'd like to see Bonaccorsi move down to 184 - in the hopes he regains the mat aggressiveness he had at 174. Solomon at 197. Rizzo at HWT. Darkhorse for 184 - Noah Wilps. Finished with more wins than Matt & finished higher at states than Tyler in high school. The previous Wilps' started their freshman/rs freshman years...

I agree very much with your post. We have some other areas that have been good to us recruiting. Ohio has been very good to us. Edgar Bright is a star in the making from St. Edwards. LJ Bentley will be coming in from St. Edwards to compete at 125/133. Also, Eli Seiple is from St. Paris Graham who sent us the Thomusseit brothers. They also produced David Taylor and are essentially a wrestling factory. Eli Seiple won the Ironman and will be a very good wrestler for us. I also agree that at 184 either Bono or Soloman will be down there next year to cover that spot. The past five years have been the best stretch for Pitt wrestling that we've had. As you mentioned conference championships were not something we were used to, and now, prior to this season, we had four straight. We need to recruit WPIAL hard and get the best talent from there. However, We've done well in Ohio and have also had great success with the non-state champions hard working types from WPIAL. See the Wilps family, Zanettas, and Tassers. In addition Keith Gavin was never a state champion and became a NCAA champion at Pitt and a current USA team member. Recall our two time NCAA champ Pat Santoro never finished better than 3rd in PA states. I completly agree that we want the best talent out of WPIAL we can get, but we can be and have been successful with other recruits. Don't forget when Cale comes in from PSU and when the Brands come in from Iowa or John Smith from Okie State, they shows these kids a lot that we don't have. We are at a point now with a new AD coming and renewed interest from our Chancellor in sports, that we maybe able to make a push to upgrade what we have and capitalize more on recruiting. I don't think it makes any sense to not support coach Peters at this point. He has proven he can recruit with that 2013 class, and I think he will recruit well moving forward. Our athletic department needs to help them out a little bit with more support.

Morelli transferred to PSU to be closer to home after he had a family issue.
