This guy's accolades were off the chart.

Is considered the "father" of modern organ transplantation.

He was listed in a book of the 1000 most important people of the entire Millennium. Won just about everything but the Nobel Prize. Like Jonas Salk, I believe he will go down as an all-time Nobel whiff (can't win posthumously).

Absolutely played a major role in establishing the reputation of Pitt's medical center and was singularly responsible for making it the world epicenter for organ transplantation.

Helped author over 2200 academic publications which have been cited over 1000 times per year since 1985.

Most modern transplant surgeons can trace their linage of training back to him. 90% of all transplant centers are headed by Starzl-directly-trained surgeons, or second generation surgeons.

We may not be Alabama in football or North Carolina in basketball; but we have amazing and lengthy school tradition, a massive list of academic accomplishments, a winning history of technological achievement to go along with an impressive collection of national sports legends.

I am quite proud of the piece of paper that hangs on my wall.

Well to be fair, there are only about five schools in either sport that can match those two schools' accomplishments.

The list of Pitt faculty or alumni considered to be a "father" of something is quite staggering:
Father of Radio Broadcasting: Reginald Fessenden
Father of Television: Vladimir Zworykin
Father of Project Management: David I. Cleland
Father of CPR: Peter Safar
Father of the MRI: Paul Lauterbur
Father of Organ Transplantation: Thomas Starzl

This doesn't included people like Samuel Langley (one of history's most prominent aviation pioneers), Maud Menten, Thomas Parran, Jonas Salk, John Wistar Simpon, Benjamin Spock, Charles King, Panayotis Katsoyannis, and Philip Hench.

Thanks for totally distracting me from my work today. ;)

Now I have to read about all of these men. :)

CrazyPaco,
Thank you for your historical contributions to this board. Your postings are informative, enlightening and interesting. Well done!

Very good article in the Trib by Luis Fabregas who is probably the only writer in town who is fair when reporting about UPMC.

Compare that with story in PG which had to bring up the stuff in 1985.

Dr. Starzl is one of many pioneering doctors at Pitt. Currently, Dr. Fu has been at the leading edge of changing how ACL surgeries are performed. We have a lot to be proud of at our university.

On a personal note, my son just got accepted to Pitt's School of Medicine. I'm sure you can imagine how proud I am of him.
