Pitt Signs JUCO Post Prospect Fede Federiko
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Men’s Basketball program added its second player of the week with the signing of 6-11 forward Fede FederikoFriday morning. Federiko earned NJCAA Honorable Mention All-America honors last season as a freshman at Northern Oklahoma and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at Pitt.
“Fede is a mobile big man with a nice combination of length and athleticism,” said head coach Jeff Capel. “He has the ability to be an outstanding shot blocker and his offensive game continues to evolve. Fede is a high-character post player who is just scratching the surface of his potential. He is a nice compliment on the interior to John [Hugley] and we look forward to aiding his development on and off the court.”
Fereriko averaged 11.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 29 games, while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field last season. He scored in double figures 19 times and posted 10 or more rebounds in a game 12 times, while helping Northern Oklahoma to a 21-8 record and the OCAC Regular Season Championship. He was also named First Team All-Region and Region 2 Freshman of the Year.
Born in Cairo, Egypt and raised in Helsinki, Finland, Federiko originally committed to West Virginia before reopening his recruitment in February. He played his final year of high school at First Love Christian Academy in Washington, Pa., before playing one season of junior college basketball at Northern Oklahoma.
He has also played for Finland National Teams, including in the 2019 FIBA U18 European Championship.
Federiko is the second forward to sign with the Panthers this week, joining junior transfer Blake Hinson (Ole Miss/Iowa State). 2022 Honorable Mention All-ACC selection John Hugleyheadlines Pitt’ss frontcourt after averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season. The sophomore forward finished the year with 22 double-figure scoring games, including eight games with 20+ points, and nine double-doubles.
Pitt's backcourt features three 1,000-point scorers in Jamarius Burton (1,003), Nelly Cummings (1,112) and Nike Sibande (1,560). The trio has combined for 3,675 points and 422 three-point field goals in their careers. The Panthers also have athletic, young wingsWilliam Jeffress and Nate Santos and five remaining scholarships available to fill out the 2022-23 roster.
